    Lee Loader Question

    Hi guys,
I'm wondering about using a Lee Loader and cast. From the you tube videos I've watched, they were using j-words. As I shoot a .311 boolit out of my 30-30, how can I expand the neck to prevent shaving lead. All of this is assuming that I'm away from home and normal tooling. Or is the lee loader really just a j-word type of tool. Thanks for any input.

You can bell the mouth with needle nose pliers.
You just insert the closed pliers push and turn.

Thanks, I love it when people think outside the box.

some of the pistol loaders had a flare tool.
just a tapered tip "punch" with a "stop" so you could bell/flare the mouth.
i dont know if there is one with the correct diameter for your application though.

i've used cast with several lee whack a mole loaders.

I started using the Lee Loaders in the early 60's and I used a similar method as Flailguy except I use a steel punch of the correct size and push the tapered round section into the case until it has a slight bell to it and that's it. my experience anyway, james

IIRC, the die body ID for seating may be under size for over size cast bullets. Just out of curiosity after reading this thread, I drove an unsized cast bullet through my 30-30 Lee Loader die body. The bullet measured .311" after driving it through the seating end of the die. So, I think a .310" bullet would be max diameter for a Lee Loader (I don't have any .310" bullets, but a .309" drops through)...

Also this die's ID may limit the amount of flare you can put on the case mouth.

I do one of two things. I use the depriming punch and a mallet to open the top qtr inch of the neck, or I don't size the neck at all and insert the boolit then sit the tool over the case and give it a tap with the mallet, then use the seater to finish seating the boolit. I use a Lee AutoPrime shellholder, Lee Factory Crimp Die, and a mallet to crimp my rounds.

You could also order a 32 cal powder thru expander and use it with a mallet to expand the casemouth. You could order the over size one and chuck it up in something(a drill with a large chuck would work) then polish it to your desired diameter, or shape.

All too true mdi, if the diameter of the bullet is larger than the die neck, it ain't going to work. Personally, I would size a case in the Lee die, then measure the inside diameter of the case neck after sizing and you should have the largest diameter of bullet that will work in that die. My .02 anyway.
