Greetings Copdills, we did a lot of testing with 20 ga round ball loads, they are fun loads but yet deadly.
RB loads are great for teaching wife, girlfriend and kids.
We do not have a smooth bore and all our shotguns were rifled.
We used a Lee .575 inch double cavity mold from MidSouth for $18 cast them with WW and put them in Trap Commander wad from BPI ( we did put two .125 nitro card of 28 ga. in wad before we put the RB in wad )
We even re-enforced the bottom cavity of the wad OP part with a .125 nitro card of 28 ga.
    https://imgur.com/gwDLnyN
Now this is a heavy load with 450 to 460 gr slug: https://imgur.com/dkBR4Bi but you need a rifled barrel or No choke at all.
Please note you need to first do a push through test with just the wad and .575 inch RB to see the fit at the Full choke for fiction fit that should be ideally 6 to 10 lbs. No nitro card for this test.
    https://imgur.com/2nkY5pd
This is a safety check and being a Full choke you might fail due to it being too tight ! !
Can you measure your choke ID, if not then try a socket set with different sizes until you find one that has a fiction fit at the choke now go to any machine shop and have them measure the OD to give you some idea.
May be the .575 RB as a full bore just might work through your Full choke.
Always start out with load testing with a new Fiocchi hulls on special from BPI and learn to read pressure signs.
The Lee MOLD 90456 D C BALL 535 or Lee MOLD 90283 DC BALL 530 might be what you need for your gun with Full choke, but unless you try you never know. Perhaps others who use a smooth bore with Full choke will help guide you.

Best of luck, its not hard you can do it and have fun at the range for pennies once you get going.

Coke tubes are available in skeet and in some cases cylinder. Wouldn't either work?

So super blazing sabots you put a 28 gauge .125 nitro card 2x under the ball and 1x under the wad itself?
I notice your pictures the wads don't look bulged out. I set a .575 RB into the 20 gauge wads I had on hand just to look and the wad petals all spread out. Difference in wads perhaps?
Scrap.... because all the really pithy and emphatic four letter words were taken and we had to describe this source of casting material somehow so we added an "S" to what non casters and wives call what we collect.

Greetings Roger, we are all in it to win it, I puts picture to tell the story and not to cause confusion.
The best wad is Trap Commander from BPI ( A blessing in disguise ) for us slug and RB shooters. You would need to push all the way home the two .125- 28 ga nitro cards from Circle Fly at a much cheaper price and more than double quantity! !
Use the right size sprocket to push it all the way in at the bottom of the picture: https://imgur.com/FcQmC1e
Please don't roll crimp ever, we use fold crimp and thus raise the RB or slug out a bit to help open the crimp without mangling the wad itself.
Here is what you too can do for big game but mind you it is a heavy load.

Here a .575 RB load for deer and wild hogs : https://imgur.com/XdCdpfX

Above all have fun cooking your own.

I’ve also had decent results with the Lee 54 cal. REAL muzzle loader bullet. In smoothbore 20 gauge
With various wads and nitro cards.

Anyone ever try this with a rifled choke? Have an accu choke barrel and a cylinder bore one is $100 and rifled one is $200 while a rifled choke is around $60. Just wondering about options.

    My shopping list
    http://www.ballisticproducts.com/Com...tinfo/020TC20/
    http://www.ballisticproducts.com/125...uctinfo/NC/28/
    http://www.ballisticproducts.com/Fio...tinfo/0642021/

Figure that at right around $30 and it will give me what I need except for powder.
I went with the low base rather than the taller metal base because I figure they would be easier to size by hand.

Greetings Roger, the rifled choke for$60 is far better and try looking for a 6 to 7 inch long rifled choke. Hastings use to make a longer version to better impart the spin.
Order from BPI the 20 ga Commander wads and from Circle fly the ,125-28 ga nitro cards at less than half the cost. The Fiocchi hulls can be had on sale at a bit better price too, talk to Eric at BPI ( A very helpful guy )
Those darker nitro cards are great but I usually get them for 12 ga, they are very stiff and provide solid support at launch.
    Best of luck.

Have any of you shot this combo with the minie from a rifled barrel? My son has a 20g Mossberg slug gun I'd like to load these in.

Circle Fly has reduced their product offerings to focus on core items. Don't see .125 cards offered anymore. They have .135 but since others had the .125 I figured I would get the suggested size. https://circlefly.com/products

I take it the dark cards are not preferred for 20 gauge?

I see track of the wolf has the .125 cards that are light colored. But I do figure the minimum shipping dings me if I buy from multiple sources.

Greetings Roger, the darker nitro cards are my all time favorite Like under the Lee Drive Key or Lyman 525 slug when the loads are hot. For nitro cards to go under the RB in wad the cheaper alternative is Circle Fly at a much cheaper rate and double the quantity.
I use to insist when ordering the darker nitro cards, that's the only one I want, not the regular ones when ordering from BPI.

    Hope it helps.

I will call or email Circle Fly directly to ask about the .125 cards since I don't see that thickness listed on the site & shipping costs. Thanks for the tip on calling BPI to insist on the dark cards. Any suggestions on powders to look into for load data? Have a little Red Dot and Green Dot, good quantity of Unique. But I'm seeing some other powders listed for RB or the Minnie ball.

Greetings Roger, the Circle Fly .135 will be even better instead of .125. just switch but be sure for 20 ga RB and the Heavy bullet you will need .135 of 28 ga and plenty of them.

Have fun, its your day Roger !

Here is a useful chart I used for Powder hull space if things don't fit, switch to the next powder that does not require too much hull space:

Protect your wad by re-enforcing it with Nitro cards:

The 20 ga hulls have a tendency to bulge at the final crimp station so I would put this ring around while crimping, Home Depot has the rod:

Don't let powder seep-by the wad and if it does fix it with a 1 inch round or square paper wraped at the base cavity:

    Its getting to be fun, enjoy C o o k i n g your own.

Those wads being cut down with a pipe cutter (pretty slick idea that) would those be CSD wads?
    http://www.ballisticproducts.com/CSD...tinfo/0207023/

My Minie ball is the Lyman 525 grain so if the 455 is a bit heavy I'm thinking I may be sort of over the top. About 1.2 ounces. So roughly a 1 1/4 oz. load. But I do see you have one at that weight as a sabot.

Greetings Roger, Yes indeed they are CSD wads and if I am right one of my load in it hit 2100 plus FPS.
Its great learning to cook your own.

Hello my brother Jmort, you were always so good and gave me support and its because of you along with a few others that I am back picking up pieces. The chrono's are all smashed and the shot guns and rifles in my other home away from my newer home.
The only guns I have here are .45, .44 Mag. and .22 all handguns.

Without my pictures I would not know how to express my ideas.

You need to try this baby too, just follow the picture setup for 20 ga RB

Here is my wish A 20 ga Nitro Express capable of handling 25000 psi loads as a Big Game Edition:

Thank you all for your friendship.
