    Question Pillar bedding a Ruger M 77

I have a Ruger M 77 in 22-250 that shoots groups of 2" - 3" with factory ammo at 100 yds. Since I can throw bullets that accurately I need to do some work on it. I plan to pillar bed this rifle first then bed the action. My question, can I make my own pillars out of brass? I am thinking that the brass might be too soft to do a good job. Should I go ahead and spend the $14 and get some aluminum pillars from Brownells?

On my Mausers I use 1/4" steel brake line from the auto parts store. Doesn't take as big a hole in the wood as the aluminum. I determine the length with the action out of the stock. I rough up the outside of the tube to give the epoxy a better grip.

. I was a little afraid of steel because of the possibility of rust. I assume that you have not had that problem.??

The Tang safety M77 is a pita for pillars due to the angled front screw.

Made a set a few weeks ago:

Buy a set from Brownells, you will be far ahead.

My guns never shot better than 2" with factory ammo. I always blamed the lack of accuracy on bullet run out. With my handloads, the bullets were seated touching the lands and accuracy improved to 3/4" to 1/2".

I have made them out of aluminum rod. I use a flat file to install the v groove for the front one. Make sure it is aligned properly before letting the bedding set.
Mine have worked out very well. Accuracy has been excellent. A great improvement over stock.
