That would be your cartridge case, wouldn't it?
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

Not sure if this will help or not.

    http://www.cip-bobp.org/homologation...-en-page76.pdf
My reading of this is max is 22.81mm and minimum is 22.56mm. Max-.8980297 Min- .8881872(Cartridge Min)

This actually(?) gives the measurement values.

    Above discussion is 1911 oriented.
    Go .898 (CIP's maximum)
NO GO .920 (Forster used to have details about different steps-couldn't find right now)

If I am understanding your question, the info you seek is usually found in most recent reloading manuals on the first page of any cartridge load in the manual. If you see the chart at the top of the page for 45ACP in the Lyman 49th, or 50th for example, the dimensions shown are usually the proper dimensions of a case & round or the max. of that dimension. Then down in the list of cartridge used there is usually a "trim to" length which would likely be the "minimum" length to start to use the round if it is longer than what you have. Or, at least that " trim to" is what they used as a "benchmark" for the rounds they fired...

Here is a link to SAAMI info for your reference if ya like to check it:
    http://www.saami.org/specifications_...tion/index.cfm

Here is a link to the PDF file thru that SAAMI link above to find the info a bout the cartrdge. case dimensions. The 45ACP is on page 168. Here is the link to the pdf file:
    http://saami.org/specifications_and_...dR.pdf#page=10

From what I understand, 45ACP cases "shorten" with firing as the base(rim/case "head") of the cartridge gets "pounded" and "bowls/concaves/dishes" the base of the round & results in it usually not needing to be trimmed at all.
    See: http://www.massreloading.com/loading45ACP.html

Here is a pic from that article that shows their results:

I hope that I helped. I tried to say what I meant the best I could.. That was my intention, anyway.

    G'Luck!

JB your third point may explain why I have never, ever trimmed a piece of .45 ACP brass in 40+ years of shooting them.

I do understand what the OP is asking, since I looked into it myself not too long ago...

& it is good to ask & as well as that... I cannot think of a better place to ask about it.

Anyway, I use 2 of these types below, for the handguns & rifles I load for:

    Below is a link to a rather, IMO( compared to what "I" paid for mine) good price for the 3 piece set. I paid way more for mine separately... { I think it was like $20+ each... not a "set"}

Here is that link if ya want to check it out:

I am gonna "shut up" now & let the more experienced folks jump in to help. I tried & did the best I could for my lil bit of experience in the "45ACP" anyway.

Interesting re the .45. I recently read quite a bit of info on 9MM. Much talk about 9MM cases that are "supposed" to be .750 pretty much never are. I checked a bunch of mine and did not find any that long. Most closer to .740 than .750, some even shorter. That being the case worrying about headspace is beside the point as the 9 as well as the .45 HS on the case mouth, or are said to. I tend to think the extractor must or might be holding the case head against the slide face. If not some guns could possibly not fire at all if the firing pin was not long enough to hit the primer reliably. I've never had that happen.
I'll be interested for opinions on this.

Being admittedly a bit frugal and thinking there isn't much to the gauge, I was debating saving $60 and making a set of head space gauges. Most of the gauges I have for rifles have a difference of about .002 to .003 between go and no go, field is normally that much again. It looks like the chamber drawing allows between .898 to .903 (.005 difference). I'll go measure some factory ammo tomorrow and see how long they are. If they do indeed shrink, I can cut the chamber so the bolt closes with gravity on .989 but has some pressure on .903. Or maybe my time is better spent on other stuff and I should just get the gauges.

Some soda can shims and a dummy round is all you need, Mike! Just kidding. Did you leave the extractor full length? I like it; post it up please.

Your funny Thomas! I'm not that much of a shade tree kind of a guy.

Here's what the project looks like right now. I'm working out some feeding issues, then its time to turn the barrel blank and then I guess I'll need to chamber it. I need to round to pop up under the claw just a little more so I can feed that short straight case. It needs to load into the chamber like a torpedo in a tube....
