    Sabot Rounds in 12g Shotgun

Has anyone had any joy with this ?

I 3D printed a Sabot to hold a 240grn .44 pil I had cast for my Marlin. It was a spur of the moment thing as I was powder coating some .44 and I did some Lee 1oz slugs just for fun and visuals.

They worked, but accuracy was poor. I could hit a 2 foot square target at 25 meters but they went anywhere on the paper. When they hit the Sabot had opened and released the little Slug.

I tried two versions, the one pictured above where the sabot was a bore rider on a MEC wad sans its petals, and one not pictured where the Sabot sat inside the wad. Not real difference in group with either.

Was this from smooth bore 12ga or a rifled barrel ... ?

If you want accuracy, those bullets/sabots need to be shot with a rifled barrel .... otherwise they will just tumble through the air ...

I have some 3D sabots from a forum member. I plan to try them out soon, in a marlin 512 slugster. If you continue testing your sabots please update us.

I suspect ill not do much more, as i suspect the rifling comment is correct.

Without rifling: there is NOTHING stabilising the projectile - it will commence gymnastics [Tumbling and turning] almost immediately it emerges from the muzzle.
