    Just for stuff

I just got back from the range. I got this here 1895 Marlin, in 45/70. I do like it. Well, I just cast some Lee 405 solids, with pure lead. Large heavy bullet.
Loaded her up with 65 gns of Pyrodex. All I can say is wow! What a performer! I was firing at clay pigeons at 50yds. With factory sights, dead on. I also fired at the pieces. Again, dead on. POA.
I only had Pyrodex, not Black Powder.
Good primer signs. Little flattening, no craters. The cases swelled and filled the chamber, no leak back. No darkened cases to speak of. I got lots of 4895, Varget, 4360, but I had never fired pyrodex in a rifle. I am convinced now. I like the 45/70, lots of versatitility.
I like. Clean up should be a snap.

As long as it's properly cleaned.

I may be preaching to the choir, but please remember that BP substitutes leave fouling that's as hydroscopic (moisture-attracting) as real Holy Black - so be sure to do a (hot) water rinse before drying, oiling & storing the rifle.

It really isn't just that it is hygroscopic, it is also corrosive. Pyrodex has its issues. I did indeed spend time cleaning the rifle. It was real clean though, no leading, no residue to speak of. I used lots of water, elbow grease, and when dry I did oil the parts. I kept the water very hot when cleaning, and boiled it off with vinegar. The water and vinegar combination, neutralizes the residue in a large way. Lots of bubbles, the hot water made the parts hot, which dried off the parts.
    It did clean up nicely.
It was a good day today with the beast.
