    Tac 1 lube?

Do you need a heater with this lube? I'm talking in a very cool basement in the winter time.
I've seen reports where it says very little heat needed. Would just like to know.
What color is it? Really doesn't matter.....just curious. Thanks for any info.

Not much at all - I hit it with a hair dryer. Nice green color.

yep, pale green and a room temp of 80º is about where it flows nicely.

Before I rigged up a heater, I would use a heatgun to warm the lubesizer and about 100 boolits (lube adheres to warm boolits better than cold boolits). But the time the 100 boolits were sized, if the room was cold, I'd re-heat the sizer and the next batch of 100 boolits.

I heat mine, but I don't like to strain the ol' Lyman 45.
85° does very well for me.

    Here's a stick of it:

Is that tac 1 or tac x? The tac1 I have is more of a pale green color. I find it works better with a little heat.

The older lube is a really pale green color, but he has started adding more green to it. See his Tac 1 add on the auction site that we can't mention. As I said, I set my PID on my lube heater for 85° and it works great. I guess you could get by with no heat if you were in a warm place.

Yea, what I have must be the older tac1. It's good stuff though, I use it on everything.

My air conditioner has to be on to get my house down to the mid to high 70s. Tac 1 flows just fine for me without a heated sizer.

Thanks for the replies guys.....I think I'll just go back to my old soft
lube I've been using for about 30 years. It flows in any temp and
always worked very well. I've always been partial to soft lubes.

This thread revived my interest in Tac1. I've been using a hard lube and I'm not happy with it. Since I live in the Central Valley of CA, I know that I won't need much, if any, heat. So first batch of Tac1 is on the way.

Several years ago Randy sold a kit to make Tac-1. The kit made 1# of lube and it was pale green and a bit hard to see in small lube groves.
I talked to Randy several times about this and he started adding a dye to the lube to make it darker. I bought more stuff to make more lube and he sent me a small
amount of the dye, and it only took a little bit to make it about the color of John Deere green.

I have to use heat with my Star as I put too much carnauba in my lube. I have pounds of the stuff and really like it.

I also remember trying to add some color to it by adding green crayons (I took some guff from Randy) to the mix to darken it up which also added
to the stiffness and the need for heat.

Len, your the one who motivated me to add a dye to the lube. As you stated, it helps to see it in the grooves better.

I have a supply of the older, more pale colored Tac-1 and like it. I never really thought of it as a hard lube. To me it seems as soft as other lubes that don't need heat. I use it in a basement that is in the mid 60's without heat in a RCBS sizer. I've used it up to 2200 FPS in summer and winter for hunting when it gets down into the 20's for temp.

This thread made me wonder a question though - can lubes dry out over time? Like for old loaded ammo or lube in the stick?
Oh great, another thread that makes me spend money.

Well I stand corrected I did try heating up the sizer with a hair dryer and it really did work better I was able to do more bullets per hour sizing.

What would be the difference between Tac1 & TacX. Can they both be used at handgun and rifle velocities?.

    Probably, depends on your application/weather?

Is there anywhere you can buy this besides the unmentionable auction site?

Hopefully I can get back into selling more lube here in the VS section. \
I use a heat gun to give my lube sizer a bit warm up, but I am in a cooler gun room

TAC 1 is for cooler climates
TAC X was made a bit harder slight higher melt temp for warmer climates
