    Non-nickel Plated Primers

Does anyone currently sell primers that are not nickel plated? Around 2001 I stocked up on Winchester primers (came in the blue boxes) and they were plain brass, non-nickel plated. I'm coming to the end of that stockpile and want to get more. I know there is no advantage to one or the other - I have just come to prefer the plain primers out of habit. Seems the only ones I can find now are nickel plated.

Winchester, at least mine are. A few years old, though. Sellier & Bellot make non plated primers, too.

I love Winchester primers and use them often but has anyone else noticed that they don’t flow through primer feeders as smoothly? Might just be my cheap Lee junk but CCI doesn’t ever hang up. Winchester will.

When Winchester dropped the nickel plating off their primers late in the last century I also noticed that they didn't slide as easy in primer feeds. Just the smoother nickel being gone that caused it. Some Remington primers are brass also but I think Winchester is the only brand that is unplated across the entire line up.

I had a batch of the un-plated Winchester LP primers that had a mottled almost bronze finish (not smooth) that gave me problems seating (not all, just some). No problem sliding down my Dillon primer tube.

I spoke with CS @ Winchester & they didn't admit to a problem, but took back the remains of the batch, paid postage & reimbursed me for the primers.

S&B primers are working pretty well for me but not all sizes are available at the same time apparently.

"...only ones I can find now are nickel plated."
There's something special about a primer that doesn't grind it's way in, weld in place and fight on it's way out.

    That's funny there!

Someone mentioned Wolf, but other than what is already out there, they and the Tula (Tula, Wolf and PMC were more or less the same primers) aren't available right now. Wish they were as the Russians make some fine primers.

Interesting... I have 3 cartons of Winchester primers that are plated. I thought I'd got them after I moved in 1999 but must have bought them earlier -- sometime in the mid 90's maybe if they quite plating in late 90's. These don't have enough poop to always fire the H108 I load in 357 so they been sitting unused for a looong time. Anybody residing in the middle part of Oregon could get a good deal on some old Winny primers.

I do not like non-plated primers. They insert much harder in the brass and do not feed freely in the loading equipment I use. I only buy Ni-plated brands now. I have several thousand brass ones I am gradually using up and will not buy those brands again.
