Been loading shotshells for 40 years but can someone describe roll crimping to me?

Its the way the paper hulls used to be crimped and nowadays often slugs are roll crimped. According to BPI roll crimping provides a better/consistent crimp for consistent powder burn.
Many roll crimp slugs so it is obvious it is a slug load and is not mistakenly loaded as a birdshot load... and I suppose vice versa.

I work up loads for slugs/buck all the time, more to get a desired velocity or just trying to get the most economical load that will cycle my shotgun, but unlike metallic i do not substitute components, ill only drop the charge a small amount though compared to metallic loading
No, but I think that Rio is buying up the cheddite plant or division in France, so in the future you may see Cheddite go away. Rio is now making hulls in Texas, and they are supplying Wal Marts target loads that are carrying the Federal label, if you buy these and are going to reload them get the Rio load data and get some Rio primers, the US primers are too small for these shells.
If you use RIO's just buy the primer pocket tightening tool from BPI. It works perfect. I've been using it for years.

BPI's "Curmudgeon" section is worth a careful look, no easy way to search but they do have listed Rio loads

There are also some 7/8 oz loads here

And they do actually have a full blown Rio reloading manual. I bought it but that only uses Rio primers. And I've just not had any luck finding them. And I haven't ordered any because I want to amortize the hazmat fee over as many primers as possible and can't bring myself to buy that many primers just yet.
