    .308 Winchester with a Lyman 311410

Looking to experiment shooting the .308 Win with a 311410 bullet at 1,500~1,600 FPS using Red Dot powder. Was wondering if anyone has tried this and would care to share their experience with it. I was hoping for a fairly accurate load at a 100~125 yard range. Perhaps it will not be possible using such a light, PB cast bullet?

I'm sure it can be done. 15-1600 is probably gonna be your MAX speed. 14-1500 for sure. I might try using a bit slower powder. Unique, 2400, SR4759 if you have any.
8-11gr of Redot might work just fine as well.

Years ago I used that bullet to start 2 of my nephews shooting in the 308.
Do not recall the charge but used Unique and had a vel of about 1200- 1300 fps.

Nice load no recoil, and they both killed a deer or two with it closer than 100yds, before they grew up more and moved on to jacketed bullets.

Thank you...I understand that I cannot push it faster as it is a PB bullet.

That is encouraging...it looks like it will work if I can attain the right velocity...should be an interesting experiment.

Red Dot works well. Pressure will start to rise quickly at the upper end of load. with PCed bullets the 165 grs maxed out at about 1900 fps backed back down in usable range the load is accurate and a pleasure to shoot. Not much powder so you have to be careful to prevent over loading.

My 30/30 has the same twist rate as my 308's and it loves that boolit with a Trail Boss load (85% load density) pushing the boolit to about 1400 fps. Above 1400 I start to get leading issues. I cannot recommend that boolit in the 308 with Trail Boss because your velocity would be much higher at that 85% LD and TB seems to get serious pressure spikes below 80% LD. You will probably have to find another powder like Unique, 5744, Bullseye, Red Dot, etc. That boolit in my 30/30 has made life difficult for coyotes around here and has kept the gong ringing at 200 yds.

I decided just to use a Lee .30 Cal 150 RF-GC bullet with 11.5~12.0 grains of Red Dot. I figure a GC will be a tad more accurate.

I've been told that a light, non-GC's cast bullet will not do well in the .308 Win or .30-06. I have tried the 311410 in the '06 and it didn't do well. As mentioned, I'll stick with the Lee 150 RF-GC and see how that works using laddered charges of Red Dot powder. Have lots of snow here so I'll not be able to try these test loads until later next month (I hope).
