newbie ? about casting for 300 blackout

ok guys, i am a total newbie for casting for rifles. I cast for my pistols but am wanting to try it for my 300blk. I will be powder coating the bullets.

i will be casting sub and super sonics

Is a gas check needed if you are powder coating?

I'm sure i will have more questions later.

    Thanks

Welcome, 300 blk is my favorite caliber to cast for. Not as easy as some/most but it is so economical to load cast in...what are you interested in? I PC and gas check but that may be Overkill. Ever looked up Elvis Ammo on YouTube? He does alot of 300 blk testing with cast and powder coating

i really want to use it for plinking and maybe shooting hogs 75 yards and under. i really like shooting this round.

ill look him up and see what he says. i really don't want to use them but if i have to its still cheaper than jacketed.

get a plain base bullet for your blackout, with powder coating you can shoot them fast, without, subsonic won't be an issue.

Simply put, a gas check bullet will shoot better with a gas check, but plain base bullets also work well. I shoot both in my 300b.o. and they are PC'ed too.

I have had great luck with the Lee c312-155-2R powder coated without a gas check in pistol and Carbine length gas systems 1/7 twist 8.5" and 16" barrel length. Over an appropriate charge of Lil Gun. And accuracy is good from 1600 fps to 2350 fps. No leading of barrel or gas system. So here is a start for ya. I'm sure others will chime in.

I know many people run similar formula here for 300AAC. I also use Lee 312-155-2R PC no GC under 15gr of H110 in PSA upper with 16" 1/8 twist. So much fun for kicking cans around for $0.10/round. My favorite plinking round right now. At least you can tell where these rounds hit not like .223s. Wont be as accurate as FMJ .223 but for new shooters and for just plinking around it doesnt matter.

I'm pushing a PB 145gr to 2100 with accuracy in 18" barrel. Haven't chronied the 170gr PB yet. All PCd.
    Whatever!

Where did you find yourself an 18 inch barrel for 300 blk?

    One more question,

Can I use pure lead if I powder coat or would it be better to cast Lyman #2?

McGowan barrels. 1:10 twist, shoots GREAT. Actually, I sent the upper (slick sided) & BCG and they assembled, H.S.d. As for alloy, 3% Sb for supers. #2 works if that is what you have. Maybe softer for subs.
    Whatever!

I've been interested with a long barrel 300 blk for a long time. Not getting much velocity but you get some...

Pure will be too soft. Lyman #2 air cooled or anything around 14-16bhn should work.

What molds are you guys having good luck with. I have the Lee 235 and its so so. The other lee molds I have don't feel well after PC'ing due to deep seating depth.

That Lee 155 2r mold is mustard for 300 blk. Many people report great results when powder coating for 300 blk.

Has anybody tried hitek coated plain based in super? Just wondering if only powder coating protects like a gas check at the higher speeds or if hitek would do a similar job

I switched from pc to hitek for everything I shoot and it’s been much easier, faster, and more consistent than my PC was. It’s easy to run into sizing problems if you add too much pc thickness on these long bullets. This is where the hitek “stain” is superior because it ads like .0005 instead of .002-.003.

There are guys pushing over 3200 FPS with hitek, I’ve only pushed it to 2400. No probs no gas port probs.

Tried it, can't seat it out far enough to get it to work.
