Great .44 story and success.

Have been hunting with a 45/70 for a number of years, but a couple of years back I bought a slightly used RUGER 77/44 from a down sizing friend and then did a lot of testing to find a good load with a 280gr Wide Flat Nose bullet I cast for my son's .444.

When it was time to quit testing and get ready for hunting season this past Fall, I was getting about a 3" - 100yds group at 1750fps.

Want better groups, so have a new 240gr WFN mold that I've started loading test round with, the test rounds waiting for Spring/Summer.

But, my Fall hunt with the .44 filled both of my deer tags. Both one shot dead right there and full penetration, one side to side at 95 - 100yds and the other at 50 +/- yds. through the neck bone and on through a shoulder blade and gone.

Come next elk season, I'll be back out with the 45/70 to see if I can bring home elk number 4 with that rifle, but for sure the little .44 rifle will be out for deer season.

The ranch dog 265 RF over 18gr. of 2400 has been my favorite for years for deer.

Don't have the Ranch Dog Mold - I designed this one to work in my Marlin long before there was a Ranch Dog. I have had this mold for a long time - don't remember the year I designed it on Mountain Molds - but it was before RD molds were offered in the Group Buy section. I can keep all shots in the center of a 9 in plate at 50 yards with my Ruger SB with a 4 5/8's barrel and all in the center at 100 with my 1894 Marlin. This one works for me - but as I do have other RD molds - I am sure that your 265 RF Ranch Dog works great too. He did design some great and effective molds.

The nose is .420 and the flatpoint (meplate) is .335.
