    Lots of good suggestions.
Surprised no one mentioned 300 Whisper subsonic, this could meet the O.P. Criteria plus it could be loaded differently for bigger pests.

Edit: Could be loaded with Unique too.

I suspect there are various concerns about big game poaching with these and similar calibers. While these events do happen they are rare compared to the numbers of legit hunters wanting only to expand their enjoyment in the field. So for now we are limited to rimfires and shotguns, muzzleloaders and archery for small game. Dangit.......
I have to agree with you Thin Man. Over on this side of Tn the running joke is that the Stewart county deer cartridge of choice is the .22 magnum and deer season is all year long.

That is one intimidating squirrel. I would be using my 9.3 x 57 with 278 grain NOE cast - but only as squirrel defense

I doubt you’ll find a cartridge that’ll do better for what you’re wanting.
Very cheap and easy to make brass.

Mine is seriously accurate and a blast to shoot.

Here in Ohio you can use whatever you want. 300 Win Mag A-OK for squirrels and flying pheasant, but you are a criminal if you use dad's 30-30 for deer.

I have killed a lot of squirrels and bunnies with 38 and 9mm both pistol and rifle.

For the states that don't allow centerfires for squirrels, is it a safety thing or are they concerned about deer poachers pretending to be squirrel hunting? Seems silly either way, but I've wondered if while hunting squirrels with my .22 Hornet, a game warden might think I was poaching deer.

I think it's to hopefully prevent an idiot from launching sluggs weighing over 40 grains into to air, so they just blanketed the law against center fire in general.

My BIL has a little .410 bore muzzleloader shotgun. He had owned it for years thinking it was a decoration/ fake gun. I noticed Spanish proofs on the barrel and asked to borrow it. I had to forge & twist the hammer nose to get a good strike on the nipple. Reading Dixie Gun Works catalog, I came up with a safe load. I took it hunting and lo &behold got two bushytails with it. I sent him the pic with the caption "Told you so!"

25-20 Winchester hand loaded and used in a single shot, bolt or lever action rifle will work very well
visit this web site for subsonic loading details including using light aloxed lubed lead boolits, powder choices, etc. it provides a Great Wealth of loading information that many others have proven to work. The 25-20 will easily knock a squirrel out of the tree as soon as the squirrel is hit with minimal meat damage

Hey! I've got one of those! It's very accurate with Winchester factory 25-20 ammo, and I have a set of dies, too. I have bullet components, but I also have 25 cal air rifle pellets left over from a couple of air rifles I've since sold. I wonder what a grain or two of Unique would do?!

I think this would be a great game bag gun, good price too.

I think "real twist" means twist Damascus, and I would be a little leery of using it. Always wanted a combo gun.
