    HI Tek and MEK

Is anyone using MEK instead of acetone for mixing with the hi tek powder. I thought it's slower evaporation rate might make it easier to get smooth looking boolits.

You should have posted this in the main Hi-Tek thread. Trevor (AusGlock) has mentioned this in there as he has used it. The main advantage, as you point out, is slower drying time which is helpful if you're coating in very hot weather. Don't know if it will make it any smoother.

The only way to get smoother is to quit swirling/shaking/tumbling BEFORE the sound starts to change.
The MEK with it's slower flash time will give you a few more seconds of swirling before you have to dump.

Use 1 mil or less solution per pound of boolits.
swirl only long enough to get the boolits coated.they should be dumped wet.

Around here in summer, Acetone swirl is like 10 to 12 seconds before dumping the bullets onto the tray.
MEK gives about 20 to 25 seconds.
if using Acetone, add about 10% Metho (denatured alcohol) to slow down the drying and allow longer swirling.
    Hooroo.

maybe I'm trying to coat to many in my cool whip container, but they don't look coated till I have been swirling for 20 sec (usually around 60-75 240g 44). I have been swirling with the lid on and that helped. I AM using 1ml per lb.

I think you need something the size of a 1 gal paint bucket.
the cool whip container is too small to allow for the needed motion.

I use multi-purpose buckets from paint stores which are 5 quart (4.7 liter) , this gives me a lot of room to shake and swirl 5 to 6 pounds of bullets at once.

I use a gallon plastic jar tucked inside my wet tumbler drum. Fits perfect!

That’s pretty much how I do mine too, except with less kangaroos

I wish you had shown your application of the liquid on that vid. I’m thinking maybe I tumble too long.

I use a 10ml syringe. Suck up 6mls of coating and squirt it into the bucket. Swirl for 15 to 20 seconds, then dump onto perforated trays to dry.
The coating is still wet when dumped.

Got a larger dia. container (Tupperware I think) seems to be working better. Coating more even and 2 coats is enough now. I was using 3. Still swirling with the lid on and a small hole poked in it.
