These are the photos the OP sent me.

He stated it was a 57-1 if that helps anyone.

Does this revolter have a pinned barrel? Are the chambers recessed into the cylinder?

I believe the -1 means no pin and no recess.

My 57-2 is neither pinned or recessed. My sons 57 is a S serial number (if I remember right---I gave it to him a good 20 years ago) is both pinned and recessed and came in a wooden presentation case when I bought it. I did have a chart on the different changes and what they meant but lost it somehow. Mine will never be sold while I am alive anyway. james

I see no barrel pin, but the space between the back of the cylinder and recoil shield does look very close so it may have a recessed cylinder.

57-1 not pinned or recessed. Some say there were a few early 57-1 that had recessed
Cylinders but this one doesn't. Gun in very good shape and has been shot very little.
Buying S&W magnum revolvers is like buying Corvetts. They have be shot extensively
or very little. Very seldom do you find one abused as far as rust or mechanical issues.
I only collect P&R adj sight models but as far as shooting I can't actually say there is
any difference. The dash numbers are changes made in production. Most are result
of machining operations dropped to cut production cost. The dropping of pin and the
    recessed cylinder is why it's a 57-1.
