J-words in .309 ????

A friend brought over an old lot of J-words for me tonight since I shoot 30 cal and he don't.
Lots of good old stuff.

In with everything there is a very old box with 500 j-word projectiles.
Spire point, 130 grn, .309 in diameter and .872 in length with a channular.
The channular is about .172 from the base.

They look like old speer stuff, good quality. Box has no label.

Just never seen a .309 j-word.

Any ideas on these??

Looks like a 7.62X39 bullet to me.

Shot a lot of the 185 grain .309" Lapua's in my 308 match rifles.

A second vote for the 7.62x39 if the grooves in the rifle are that diameter or smaller. IIRC the original codes for this caliber called for grooves at .311" but with any rifle a few test rounds will tell you if these bullets are a good match - will give a respectable group. Give 'em a try.

Yes those were originally for the 7.62x39, probably seconds at .309 and in a bulk box. I've bought them that way, still have a few left. They shoot fine in .308s, just work up a load as usual.
