    Now there is the question!

Yes, I've seen those videos and many others and there are some pretty nice slugs out there but... they are not readily available to the handloader and some if not most are rather pricey.

I bought some AQ slugs from BPI about 10 to 15 years ago and paid $15.00 US for 25 slugs which isn't horrendously expensive. They were easy to load and gave me roughly 6" groups at 100 yards which is pretty good from smoothbore. However, I am a home tinkerer and want to make these things myself, partly to save money and partly to be more self sufficient and that is where the problem comes in. The stuff just isn't available for home casting then assembly.

These new Russian slug moulds with tail wads are the closest I've seen but the mould won't do you a lot of good if you can't get the tail wads.

For rifled gun a solid slug makes the most sense to me but for smoothbore you just got to have a round ball or drag stabilization. I've been trying to come up with a simple tail wad for some time now and while it can be done, in my experience it is either time consuming or expensive.

I've done okay using hot melt glue in forms for tail wads on wad slugs but getting consistent tail wads without injection moulding equipment or machining each one is the trick.

Look up Cap'n Morgan's adventure in producing a Brenneke clone. he did a beautiful job but has access to CNC machines and injection moulding machines which most of us don't.

Anyway, the quest is still underway for many of us.
