cast in an old timer gets it done

Got a doe in our late season this afternoon. Used a Marlin 336 rebored to 38-55 shooting my home cast Accurate 38-250B, plain based, powder coat, at about 12 Bhn. Load was 32-3031 for 1600 fps. Caught the rear edge of both shoulders at 25 yards, with lots of bloodshot on the entrance side. Exit looked good. She mule kicked at the shot, took about 3 jumps and started stumbling, dropped in site in less than 30 yards. I think with that big meplat I'll drop velocity a bit for next year, under a big head of steam it can do some damage. 21-4198 with a bit of dacron for 1400 fps worked well last year and should be plenty for the heavy timber I'll use it in.

That old rifle had been rode hard and put away wet many times before I bought it. The stock had been "refinished" partially, basically muddied up the original finish. You can see some of the rough area by the forward barrel band that was rusted, what you cant see is the last 1/4 inch or so of the barrel that had been counter bored with a dremel trying to get rid of the rust in there. I bought it cheap enough, and sent it to JES who did a tremendous job. This thing is very accurate. Finally got around to finishing the stock last summer.
Now that hunting season is over, I'll switch out the scope for the Skinner Express I use for off season practice. I just like the looks better without the scope.

Good job with an interesting rifle.

I like the extended season in Kansas and have had pretty good luck during it over the year. I've been tagged out the past few seasons before, but by new years, the days are longer, weather is usually good 9though cold) and the public land I hunt is usually so devoid of other hunters I won't see a soul out there. The deer are less spooky than during the regular firearms season too.

I need to get back to my .38-55. It's a cool cartridge.

    Good evening and Congratulations !
Yea at 25 yards 1600 fps really would put a whallop on anything a FN caliber 38 smacked into. But I would rather wack-em well than have to spend 2 hours crawling about looking for a few little drops here and there. Tasty eating there...

The very first deer I ever killed with a cast bullet or a rifle with iron sights was done with a Marlin 336CB in 38-55 shooting the Lyman 375449 bullet pushed with SR4759 . That was in 2002 I believe .

    Nice!! The 38/55 is my new favourite. I got a ‘94 and more recently a Winchester/Miroku 1885.
I dropped a moose just this last fall with the 94. Not a cast boolit though. Next year
IMR 3031 is a good powder, my 30/30 & 308 seem to like it too.
    Congrats on your hunt.

Well done. That'll be taste I do have a question: What has to be done to a Marlin 336 to convert it to a .38-55? Are there particular model 336's required or can a .30-30 / ..35 Rem be used? It sounds very interesting.

From .30-30 to .38-55 shouldn't take much besides a rebore. Everything else is the same dimensions.

That's exactly what I did. Took a buggered up 30-30 Marlin and sent it to Jes at 35caliber.com (the link above), it came back in a week or so as the easiest project I've ever done. I can't recommend him enough, good to work with, great metalworking, very quick turn around.
