I miss deer hunting in Kansas, and all those extra doe permits. But mostly that grain fed venison.

Not as easy to get doe permits as it was a few years ago. I could only get two tags good in this area, would have had to drive a long way into unscouted area to be able to legally use another tag.

That is awesome. I can't wait to send mine to JES to be turned into a .38-55.

Fine shot, and I love that you took the time to put an old abused rifle back into useful service. It's a hobby of mine, buying or trading into "budget, beat up bubba'd" rifles and restore them to glory, save money learn useful skills and make something that is truly yours! Well done all around!

Thanks for the kind posts fellas. I had been reading here and elsewhere about the 38-55, and it just seemed to fit some of my hunting areas. When sitting a stand where you can't even see 75 yards, it just seems wrong to use a high velocity modern rifle. Cast in an old timer is not only plenty, but more appropriate in my eyes.

Nice! I bought a M94 .30/30 from an estate sale (paid $135 due to its condition) to do either a .38/55 or .35/30. That was 6-7 years ago and have not done it. They are both great cast calibers.

You did a fine job on yours! I had quite a bit of rust on mine and could not get it looking good. Hard to justify for me as the .30/30 is a decent enough round for a truck gun.

That sounds like a prime candidate for a coating like ceracote or gunKote

I dunno, I kind of like it as is.

My .38-55 is an old Waffle top someone rebarreled with a long, heavy, octagon barrel. Unfortunately, I have not gotten it to shoot very well at all, but I have a lot of things to check and try yet. I just bought a set of RCBS cowboy dies for mine with the bigger expander plug, hopefully that will help.

I just picked up a 1961 336 with a 1/2 mag in 30-30 that is about to become a 38-55 soon.No lawyer proof crossbolt safety.

For anyone who might be interested, I had been having bad results with the .38-55 Marlin rebarrel I bought. I suspected bullet size was at least part of the problem (I was shooting the Lee bullet unsized and tumble lubed) and had been using my Dad's old set of RCBS dies with a small expander. I took the plunge and bought a set of their Cowboy dies and the first two groups shooting the same bullet and loads I'd tried before were suddenly grouping into a third the size of what it had been. I don't know that all .38-55s are that sensitive to this, but those Cowboy dies made a world of difference in mine.
