Yes they are!! When I look at a Super Redhawk knowing it is supposed to be the strongest D/A revolver made. I just can't get by seeing and thinking the SRH with a barrel that looks like it was sleeved into a shorter barrel, its ugly. Even the grips with the wood insert are just as ugly.

I have a 9.5" Super Redhawk. I gotta admit, it has looks that only a mother could love. I resisted purchasing one, because I couldn't get past the looks.

That being said, I came to the realization that the SRH looks the way it does, because of its capabilities. Form follows function.

Still, the S&W will win the beauty contest.

I have generally preferred Rugers in the past, but anymore, my desire to load to the upper limits has waned greatly, so ability to shoot more of the hot stuff is not really a selling point to me - especially in a shorter, lighter platform.

My S&W experience has been a bit more limited, but the throats seem to be more optimized for jacketed, and you might need to have them opened up for best results with lead.

I've got to grudgingly say that they seem to fit the hand, point, and recover from recoil a bit better than a similar size Redhawk, but not well enough to make me prefer them.

they cost too much for me but i'll take a ruger sbh that is plain vanilla over s&w. its not about how much you spend (and boy can you ever!!!) but what it worth to you.

If you can get past the two-bit grips, a Ruger can be attractive.

I use 9.5 grains of H. Universal with a RCBS 240 gr LSWC in my 4" and 6" S&W 629's. They shoot extremely accurate out to 75yds, and they recoil enough to feel like a solid hitting round without feeling uncomfortable.

Back in the last century when I was younger and had hair it was also the time of the `Dirty Harry` movies. After the second movie came out I was approached by a work colleague with a new 29 - 2 6"barrel S&W. He was going into divorce and was moving his guns before they were sold off for his 50 per cent share. I bought the 29 new in the box and unfired for $200. I have since then put a set of Wolff springs in it and a set of Hogue mono rubber grips on it as well as a Magna porting job. I have a few molds but the 29 seems to like the old LEE WC boolet.Robert

I love my mod 29-6, made in '94. I bought it used about 15 yrs go. It's had a few full power loads thru it, but mostly 10gr #5 and 429421 at about 950fps. Cans at 50yds from a rest are no prob. I have a 2x leupold and have killed a couple deer with it.

If you think they are ugly now, just put a coating on it! It is REALLY ugly now but its the absolutely best shooter I own. Day in and day out it will make ragged holes if I do my part and they will swallow any reasonable load you stuff in them without a hiccup.

Mine is a 29-2, so far no issues. Then again, I haven't shot a thousand rounds with it yet...

The best part of 357 and 44 magnum is it’s “special” counterpart. Shoot magnums when you need magnums, 90% of the other time shoot a special and truly enjoy your magnum.

There are some good prices on 4" model 29 classics on gunbroker lately.

Just bought a 5.5" Stnls. Ruger Flatop Bisley in .44 special. Free shipping and no sales tax. Hard to beat that.
