A friend just got a new 1950’s Savage 99. I gave him some of my NOE 311-180 FP(311041) to try but we are wondering if there is a better cast bullet.

I borrowed a Remington Model 81 autoloader in 300 Savage. I'm using Mihecs 180gr 30 Silhouette bullet in it with better then good results. One inch groups with the iron sights on it. The bullet is like it was designed for it as the base of the bullet doesn't go past the base of the neck and they fit the magazine well. I've had much fun with that rifle and that bullet. If you can see good enough you can crank that sight up to next to the last notch and it's dead on at 300 yards and water filled oil cans are easy targets for it. Nice setup, sight all the way down dead on at 100 and up to almost the last notch on at 300. Velocity is up there and the rifle just gobbles them up.
The 311041 is a good boolit, the Lee C309-170F works well in my 99Attachment 210553. Either one will be seated below the neck however. It hasn't been a problem for me thus far.
Thanks guys, keep em coming!
Oooh....I just inherited my great uncles 1957 99 Savage in 300 Sav as well. So, I’m very interested in hearing more on boolit selection.

MP's 30 Sil or 30 Hunter have worked for well for me. The 30 Sil is one of the few molds that I cast as a HP. Both seat below the neck but it's a non issue.
My 300 Savage's do OK with whatever I feed 'em but mostly they get the 120 grain Lee "soup can" with 10.5 grains of Green Dot for about 1700 fps. This lighter boolet gives more boolets per pound of metal and I am mostly just ventilating tin cans with this 32/20 equivalent load.
Im shooting a lyman 311466 in my model 99 300savage. With 3in group at 120yds
Depends on the use too. I haven't found a 30 caliber yet that wouldn't shoot the 160gr 2R TL Lee well but I'm sure there are better bullets say for hunting.
If price of the mold is one of the concerns I'm sure you can find one of the Lee's that will work fine.

How about this Ranch Dog design made of the 300 savage.

i'd go with the 165gr ranch dog too.
When wringing accuracy out of the two 99s in 300 that I have using jacketed or barnes bullets I have gotten the best results with lighter copies. The Hornady 135 gr spire point and 130 gr triple shocks both gave moa accuracy. The long twist rate of the 99 is problematic for longer bullets. Strange seeing as almost all factory rounds are 180 gr. I had good performance with the noe 311-155-fn, but havent done much.

Good morning
Have a 99 in 300 also. It all depends on what needs popped. Yotes at 150 yards and less a 125 grainer is plenty.
A 250 pound pig at 100 yards or less I would go with the heaviest FN cast my rifle will still get chugging along at 1850 fps accurately.
Corn crunchers are going to depend on how big your's are. But if ILLinois will ever trust us to use center fire rifle I have no doubt a 180 grain FN will do everything a 250 pound bean eater can take.
After all the 30-30 has been eliminating traffic hazards with a similar cast slug for 130 years with so little fuss.

Good thread, I need to get back to work on my 300 Savage project. I really like the RD boolit but moved on to other projects after the initial group buy. Keep us posted on your progress, OP!

I got one of those Ranchdog molds designed for the .300 Savage but have no as yet cast with it. I need to get off my butt and do that. That said, the conventional Ranchdog shot pretty well in mine with 28 grains of IMR 4895 and a tuft of Dacron.
