    Wood rifle rest

Maybe someone has done this before, but here's my improved version of a two position wood rifle rest. The improvement is the addition of a 10 degree angle to the legs. This will bring the center of gravity over the base. I've used right angle rests before and just by setting the rifle on them they want to tip over.

I've seen someone make a triangle one.
    Triangle in a triangle.
The three cross braces are at different heights.

Was wondering if anyone would notice the target. Those holes are from a 71/84 Mauser at 200 yds using a couple of different boolits I'm testing. If they're too far apart I don't bother writing the load on them and just write NFG in the data book. Will use the rifle rest for the first time today with the repro M1 Carbine. If it works OK, then I'll be making a bunch of them for the local gun club.

Maybe a couple of triangle braces to stiffen it a bit. Just a couple of 3/4 inch boards or plywood triangles on the outside edges.

OMG those rough wood edges will scratch the purty kevlar stocks.

Let us know if it works like you think then I may steal the idea for my gun club. (with your permission of course)

    Merry Christmas

Had thought about braces on the sides but decided to try it without first. Used two 3" wood screws that seem to make it fairly solid. Those are the hardened Philips head kind of screws. After using it today I'm going to make the short leg a 1/2" longer and change the angel to 15 degrees. This makes both legs 7-1/2" and with the joint the long one will be 1-1/2" higher. Notch is 1" deep. Used a 1/4" radius router bit to soften up the edges. Since I'm in charge of maintenance (sweeping, cleaning, change backboards) at the local club, I'll make a bunch of them and put them out and see how they work. Feel free to use it, just let them know you got the idea from upnorthwis.

Just stretch a bicycle inner tube over the flats and attach it with a staple gun around the ends. I like simple devices good job.

Will do on naming rights. I may get some burlap bags and cut them in strips and hot glue 3 layers over the notches. Burlap bags $2.99 each at Murdocs.

Bet most who use them will bring a towel, bar cloth or other pad to use on them with them. We made some front rests up and lined them buit out doors the winds carry a lot of sand and grit that gets deposited in or on everything the cloth holds it. Members now just bring a towel or pad with them. Ours have steps at 2" 4" and 6" I believe.
A even better idea might be to cut the notch a little deeper and a 1 1/2" nylon strap across it with a little sag or droop in it. This would form a Vee that conformed to barrels or fore ends better. Glued nand nailed down it might be the way to go.

This is the rag I use. Picked it out of rag bag at work about 20 years ago. I call it Peggy Bundy's underwear. It goes with me to every match. Almost lost it at Quigley, but someone could see the value in it and put it on the lost and found table.
