Putting GC Shank on PB Boolit

Does anyone make a tool to form or cut a GC shank on a PB boolit. I have a couple of PB moulds(SAECO 630 and Ideal 308241) I really like, and I would like to try GC's on them. They may perform horribly with GC's, but I won't know until I try.

You could try gas checks intended for plain bases. They are thin ( usually .004 pop cans to .006 from other scources) They size on to the base. They may allow a increase in speed and less leading.

Definitely try using plain base checks before going to lots of trouble and expense. They are pretty cheap.

Thanks! What is a PB check? Where can I get them?

I was thinking of modding a Lee FCD collet, to squeeze a shank on a PB boolit.

What you do if you have a Lyman or RCBS type luber/sizer is made a washer to fit inside the nut that holds down the sizing die precisely. Then you open the inside hole up to just fit your bullet diameter unsized. This washer will center that bullet to go into the sizing die. Next you put a small recess in that washer where you will place a preciselycut diameter aluminum disc cut from soda cans or other suitable aluminum material. You place this loaded assembly with the cut disc face down on top the sizing size. It will be inside the nut I spoke about. Then you size and lube your bullet as you normally would and viola you have a "freecheck" that is good to over 2000 fps. I've shot pure lead from 9mm, 38 Super, and 10mm at jacketed velocity with absolutely nothing in my bore even hardly any powder fouling. Here are some pictures of what I'm talking about. My material is a powder coated thin aluminum in this case. You fellows need to get yourselfs a lathe, even a mini-lathe so you can make all this things. I consider a lathe part of your firearms and reloading setup. You need to make a punch to cut those aluminum discs and I use my drill press for the press to do that.

Heres another way..I purchased a Hoch nose-pour .25 tapered mould from this site, this bullet is tapered for breech-seating. Found out it might be too long for my .25-25 Stevens with 1-12" twist..won't know for sure until I can actually try it..anyway, I got to thinking it would be nice if it were a gas-check design so I could use it in my .25 Krag with it's 1-10" twist. I thought it was a waste of time, but I slid a .25 check onto the bottom cutoff plate of mould & slid it into cavity, & gently closed mould blocks. No light shown at seam & opening mould showed check flush & square with base. I cast up a quantity of these but testing will now have to wait until Spring.

Or you could get a member to send you a sample of the plan base gas checks to try . Maybe

Couldn't he buy some PB gas checks to try from Sage Outdoors?

Patmarlins sells PB gas check makers if it works.
    A deplorable that votes!

I use a 3" jeweler's lathe with positive position stop inside the collet. You can work right on your loading bench. This is fast and accurate! I've went down the thin plain base type mentioned. They may improve leading??? But I've compared both methods in side by side tests. And there is NO comparison! Pop cans may get you by for handguns..... But for very accurate varmint type cast loads in rifles they don't pass the muster.
