    thinking ahead for a re-bore

do most 375H&H mags have enough "meat" in the barrels to bore them out to the 416 Remington mag? or would it be batter to make the bigger recoil jump from 30 caals and 12ga slugs to the 416? my thinking was, to avoid flinching and other accuracy problems, it might be better to shoot the 375,. get used to it, then think about going to the 416 rem mag. it seems that the cartridges are exactly the same, until the shoulder, that is. thank you, Travis

The standard used to be .250" of material surrounding the bore. My Whitworth .375 would be cutting it close if I was to rebore it.

hmmm, not sure about the thickness of 375 win model 70 or cz550 barrels, but I think jes says a little less than that is ok. were you talking about .25 total or .25 on each side?

That would be .251" per side and is dependent on the category of steel used in the original barrel and the operating pressure of the cartridges involved. It can get as thin .167" with some barrel steels. I have a Mcgowen barrel ultra featherweight in .338 mag that Harry made for me that is thinner than that but it proofed (remotely) fine.

    .

    FWIW

In a conversation, Jess ( www.35caliber.com ) told me that for any rifle barrel re-bore, the minimum resulting barrel wall thickness per side is .125", for a total of .250", added to the new more groove diameter, which translates to a .375 re-bored to .416 would require a minimum muzzle OD of .250" + .416", or about .670" (+/-), for measuring sake.

Two other nationally-known re-bore men told me the same thing, and would not do the re-bore if the barrel to be re-bored didn't at least meet the minimum.

yeah, that sound like what he told me,(.125), is the difference in recoil from .375H&H to 416 rem mag that much different? ( I know it ca vary with loads and boolit weight, but lets just say on average.
