    SAECO Mould #050

I want you folks to know that I have looked and looked for a reference to SAECO mould numbers and I have come here as a rookie because I don't want to lose an opportunity to buy an older four cavity mould. The seller and I are having a conversation and they have placed all the appropriate qualifiers on the sale and I'm right there want to pull the trigger......but now I have to ask:

The mould in question is a four cavity unit that will come with handles. There are few (almost none) indentifying marks or numbers on it except "050", and the seller seems to know that it is a SAECO mould. The Redding site references a 052 and 053 mould as slightly different wadcutters, but does not reference a 050. I did find one old obscure posting on a Pensylvannia firearms site that was selling bullets produced from a SAECO 050. Other than that.....nuthin'.

The seller says that a very similar Ohaus 2 cavity mould throws a 148gr pill, but we're not sure of the weight that this 050 mould will cast. So....

Can someone help this rookie out a little? Maybe shove me toward some old SAECO mould numbers that I can't seem to find? Or maybe even someone has a SAECO 050 in their casting inventory and can supply me with empirical data.

What I want to do is cast 38cal. projectiles to load and shoot in my S&W Model 28 4"bbl. (and other 38/357 treasures) And I think a good solid wadcutter style would be a good mould to have.

    Please and Thank You,

The H&G No.50 is a 148 gn. wadcutter with a small nose. It has 3 rounded grease grooves and 1 crimp groove. H&G was so dominant in molds their mold numbers were used by other manufacturers.

the 50 is also the most known and available mold they made.
so they don't command 'premium' or 'vintage' prices.
so don't be spending 200$ for no 4 cavity mold, even if it's new in box, signed by both Hensley and Gibbs and their signatures are gold filled.

    H & G made the #50 cast in .356 & .358" for auto's and revolvers...thing 'is'...which one?
If you are a PC'er it prolly wouldn't matter.

How does the current owner "Know" it is a SAECO mold?
I tend to agree that it may be an actual H&G.

H&G 8 cavity uses nutcracker style handles and saeco uses tong style. At least all the ones I've seen. I've got a San Diego and Murphy H&G #50. Both are marked 50 not 050.

Yes, but we don't know what the OP is looking at.

Just trying to help ID. I reread his OP and see it's a 4 cavity. Both use tong style handles but the sprue plate pivots by #1 (or#4) cavity on a H&G and Saeco is between #2 & 3. None of my Saeco's has a groove across the tops of the sprue holes. Every H&G 4 cavity I have does. Maybe this will help him determine what he's actually looking at. I agree with R5R that $200 is a lot for a H&G 50.

Yeah, I sent the guy 85 bucks. We'll see how I did. Thank you though for all the wisdom. Umm....but no listing of Saeco numbers stashed away somewhere?

    The new mould came today

And boy do I like it. I have no experience to back up my opinion, but mechanically I think this thing is in pretty good shape.

Given some time and enough reading, I expect to put this mould to good use. I know assigning an age to these things can be tricky, but offhand I don't think this SAECO is recently made. Any wisdom on this thing?

I missed this earlier, but for future clarification, While Saeco "borrowed" some designs and designations from H&G, they added a precursor "0" to the design number, making the "050" design, or the "068" design etc.
