500gr .45-70 powders

Evening folks. I'm hoping someone here may be able to guide me with this please - I've bought a Lee 500gr mold to cast for my .45-70 but now I've got home and looked into it I'm struggling to find data for it! I've got gas checks etc at the ready, and the closest powder to useful that I think I have is Alliant Reloder 10x. I also have Unique, but from what I can tell loadings with this powder are for modern actions (Ruger #1 etc) and may be too much for my Marlin 1895?

We're starting to have serious issues with powder here in the UK. An ingredient in a lot of Hodgdons and US powders is in the process of being banned... Good old Europe is causing the issue I believe? So if anyone has any data for Alliant/Vihtavouri/Reload Swiss powders that would be fantastic! I've been wading through pages of stuff from Google all afternoon and haven't found much!

N133 or N135 work well in the 45-70.

you can always use trailboss and use the 70-100% free case fill under the projectile formula they post ( to figure non listed loads ), absolutely no compressed loads.

I shoot 45-70 325 gr cast with 70% cast fill of trailboss all the time. Mild load.

I have a 405 mold, and a 500 gas check mold. I use the 500 for 458 winmag or 458 lott.

Fantastic, thanks guys. I have Unique and BLC2, and a mate has viht 133 and 135. That'll be enough to get me started. Any idea on the charges with the Viht Nobade?

If you can get Swiss BP simply go with a case full of it.

I believe Crater loads used H322 or H335. Those are around 550g and fit in a Marlin 1895. Maybe do a search for that.

For the 500gr. Lee bullet, consider 34gr. N133 to be max, and 36gr. N135 max. You can just barely overload it with 133, but 135 is safe with a compressed load. This is with that big bullet that seats quite deeply, lighter weights will of course be able to use more powder.

Just curious, where did you he your varget data, I couldn't find it on their website for a 500gr projectile. I have not checked the Lyman cast book yet.

For my Browning BP SIL rifle I used a Saeco 540gr gc boolet and 50 grs of AA 3100 @1,300 fps for a 2.5" 25 shot group @200 yards using a scope.

When you are working on these loads consider the over all length that the Marlin magazine will accept . I don't think it will take a lot more than 2.550" before it wants to hang up .

If you intend to single load that's a different story .

That is why the loads I listed are so light. And wondering how you'd get 60 gr. Of any powder behind that bullet at 2.550".

As a late reply to this, a very kind chap in a .45-70 group I'm a member of did some Quickload data for me. I'm starting with a 36gr charge of RL10x, seated to 2.550 as I believe that is indeed as long as the Marlin will reliably cycle.

Sadly, the likes of Trail Boss and a lot of the US manufactured powders are soon to be discontinued here. That's why I've tried to steer away from Hodgdon etc. It's a shame, they're good powders.

I assume its an original 1895 marlin and not a newer "1895 guide gun " if the govt maybe banning powders does that just mean you cant buy it anymore or it would be illegal to own what you already have ? ( in other words, buy a bunch before its too late )
