Round ball loads in T/C Scout ?

Has anyone here used round ball loadings in your T/C scout carbine . I realize it has the faster twist for heavier bullets . I'm trying to get a youngster shooting the gun without a lot of recoil . Plus he hunts in the woods at archery distances .

What is the caliber?

I've shot round balls in my .44 mag Marlin 1894 but prefer my relatively lightweight Accurate mould 43-165B at 165 gr. The balls seemed to go a little squirrely with anything other than very light loads. The Accurate boolit is more forgiving but still light and low recoil... basically like a collar button.

I had some pretty young kids shooting the Marlin and making big holes in targets with no recoil issues at all.

RB's in my Scout pistol work just fine. For your youngster, I'd start out around 60 grs FFg and move up if desired. If you shoot FFFg, start maybe around 50 grs. 530's with a .015 lubed patch should be pretty easy. Tighten it up if it's too loose.

I just started using the T/C Shock Waves in my Scout pistol and haven't yet come to a final load. Seems like I am heading toward very good accuracy, though.

I know that in my Renegade .54 seventy grains of 2f is the most accurate but the twist is slower too . This scout carbine may work better with a lesser charge because of the twist . Anyone here tried this in the carbine ?

What twist rate is your's? They cam in two different twists. I've shot mine (54) with RBs but not extensively. Might has the tighter 1/20 twist. It shot good at 25y but I haven't shot it yet at further distances. You probably need a tight patch with it's tight twist and shallow rifling.

I never tried round balls in my .54 Scout, but the 310 gr. "ball-et" shot very well over as much as 90 gr. of fffg.
(If you aren't familiar they are a hollow skirted roundball.)
I'm sure you could cut down the powder charge and get a noticeable reduction in recoil.

Hah! I was way off base then! I obviously didn't realize this was a muzzleloader. I thought it was one of the break action single shots. Oops!

T/C quit making them some time ago so it is no surprise that some people don't recognize it. There are even a few other guns out there that go by the name of Scout.

I used 60gr FFg under a 230gr PRB (.015" thick patches) in a friend's .54 Scout Carbine, for one of his kids (he didn't know what to use, either).

The youngster dropped a few deer with it (over several seasons), before he moved up to full-power loads.
