Henry 327 Federal and Skinner Express

I put Skinner Express sights on my Henry carbine and with my cast handloads I was hitting 3 1/2 inches high at 50 yards with the rear sight all the way down. My load is a 115 grain bullet running 1500 fps I ordered a new front sight from Skinner that was .750 tall. The factory gold bead sight measured .560 from the bottom of dovetail to top of sight.

I got it installed and took it to the range today to zero it in. I set the rear sight up 3 turns and was about 6 inches low at 25 yards. I started filing down the front and shooting till I got it close at 25 yards and then moved to 75 yards. It was very close to zeroed at 75 as well. I had taken off right at .125 to get it set where I wanted it. It looks like I could have just ordered the .650 sight and not had to file at all.

In my opinion the new front sight gives a better sight picture with the express sight than the factory gold bead did.

Do you feel you can hold a better group with a flat blade front sight? I've been undecided on if I want the flat blade or a fiber optic.

I have them on all my Marlins. I always order the tallest sight and file from there. I've gone through the same thing multiple times where I could have ordered a shorter front sight. They're the best sights available for lever actions, as long as you don't need field adjustment. I won't be w/out one.

I wear progressive lenses and find I prefer thin blade, flat top, with plenty of daylight around it. If I'm forced to use a bead I still like plenty of daylight around it!

I prefer the flat blade over the fiber optic. You can always get some fluorescent paint and put it on the blade.
