    Still Hunting versus stalk hunting

I'm curious as to how many people still hunt regularly and have been succesful over time. I have killed all of my deer stalk hunting in a stand or sitting on the ground. I have half-heartedly tried still hunting, but it's not a successful method that way. Looking for tips on clothing, sights, guns, methods and success stories from you fellows (gals) that have done it well over time.

I hunt mostly in woods on ridges in middle tennessee with few open fields.

    Thanks,
    David

I generally still hunt or shoot from a stand. Keep quiet, move slowly, watch for movement. I would not still hunt where I didn't have 3-5 miles to cover or was in terrain I knew like the back of my hand,

move a little look a lot, be quiet.
it can scare every bit of adrenaline out of both of you when you get within 15' of a bedded buck you didn't see and he suddenly realizes your there when he smells you.

I've never hunted from a stand in my life, in over 45 years of hunting. Killed a few hundred deer, four dozen elk, and a handful of bear while 'still' hunting.

Most of that game was taken with cast boolits, too!

While I love reading the woods and setting stands/using climbing stands, I’ve had some of my most successful and enjoyable hunts still hunting. It is a challenge to move so slowly and carefully, but everytime I’ve done it I’ve not been disappointed. Good camo, careful attention to the wind and becoming molassas slow are what I’ve learned are keys to success.

To me still hunting is all most the same as stalking, if there's any difference it's when you are stalking a particular animal like following a set of tracks. I've never had any luck stalking like that, on the other hand moving very slowly (still hunting) I've seen lots and gotten a few. Most of my successful deer hunts have been from a deer stand, years ago I had a beautiful place to hunt and had a nice 4x8 stand with a roof, to bad the land sold and I no longer have access.

I just thought about driving, I gotten lots (at least 12) deer by driving. Problem is there's not much left when you hit doing 65 or 70!

Still hunting; Moving silently through the forest in search of game.
Stalking; Trying to sneak upon your game that is in view.
Stand hunting; Hunting from a fixed location, not moving from your stand, ie tree stand.

I have no idea what it means, could be one of the many mysteries of life that should just be shrugged off and forgotten.

I mostly hunt from a fixed position due to the small tracks of private land I hunt. Don't have enough acreage to do much stalking

I'm lucky enough to live in a place where I can walk at least 1.5 miles, closer to 7-8 miles in 2 directions, through good timber in any direction I choose so I still hunt exclusively. Just head upwind, go slow, stop often and look constantly. No shortage of dead deer here. As far as guns go, anything short without a scope is about ideal for our thick conifers but I've carried (and shot 2 deer with) a full length M96 Swede. Plenty of leverguns, singleshots, and revolvers too. Whatever floats your boat. I wear wool, folks say it's quieter than most of the modern fabrics but it's all I've ever had so I couldn't say. Works for me.

I still hunt from the ground. I pick spot off the trail and set my lure up and have a pad that I sit on and wait. I have had them come 5 ' from me and shot them. The 2 deer i got this season was sitting on the ground on a pad and one was 15yards and the other was 35yards. I do very little walking for them when i know how they are.One was with a cross bow and the other was muzzle loader with a cast boollit.

Sorry for the confusion. I always thought the terms were confusing too. I got the definitions out of an old stackpole book on hunting that my dad had when I was a kid and dreamed about hunting deer. Dad was not patient enough to hunt deer, but did teach me to hunt squirrels, doves and rabbits. All of my deer pursuits were in the pages of that book and others until I was old enough to hunt on my own.

Stalking in that book was defined as trail watching and still hunting was slowly creeping through the woods. The still hunting definition is still used today as it's all over the internet, but what I called stalking I should have called stand hunting. And it is quite possible my memory is faulty...

I hunt public land and during deer season would not be wise or fair to others sharing the public land to be out walking around. Outside of deer season I am almost always on the move chasing down hogs and turkey. I hate sitting in one place but unfortunately it is the onlyway for me to hunt deer.
