Tacking a stock

many many hours of drill, lubing and carefully punching in the nails, but I think it came out real nice looking, but most importantly, it actually functions to offer a better grip on the rifle. I still have plenty more work ahead on the palm swell for my shooting hand, but my finger tips are tender and its time to call it a day. I tried to find the smallest nails i could find and these were it. They are for powder horns. I do not like the big tacks as they are just huge and look out of place, plus I wanted a good feeling pad when I grip onto the stock. We'll see how she comes out in the end. Just taking my time and thinking things through and carefully drilling the holes to prevent cracks.

I like it, that's really very fine work. Your spacing is very even, did you make a pattern or just freehand and eyeball everything?

Just free hand with a tape line. I get off a little here and there but guess what? dont hurt a darn thing as its for function, but museum quality lol. Nothing fancy, just something for my hands to grip on for a better hold, especially when its cold and wet. The palm swell area really has me thinking over time and im not sure what I will do on that section.

18 guage are hardware store brads, brass coated steel.

these are not steel, i cut most of them to 1/4" or less.

If you got them from Crazy Crow, they ARE steel, that have been brass plated. About the only source for real domed brass tacks, is to find an old steamer trunk, and pull the tacks. Things I learned from 30+ years of museum restoration.

well if they are steel, they sure found a way to brass coat them completely through because when I cut them shorter, they are brass clear through.

I think I just found a use for that baby food jar of copper nails I found in my grandfathers stuff! I never could figure a use for them and wonder what they were good for, now I know. BTW your work looks great!

I'm talking about the hollow domed tacks. What you used are classed as nails.
