Been messin' up all this time.... ( COAL )

    Decided to start from scratch.

Remeasured COAL about 23 times today with my 2 main bullets.

My ranchdog bullets were loaded 0.100+ past the lands....

Thank god i realize this before i pursued a really really high FPS hunting load.

Now my only concern is, ( does this look right?)

They were squabby before but now they look " wrong "

These are .015 off the lands.Click image for larger version.

Did they chamber when loaded to .100" past the lands?
    How did they shoot?
That picture looks wrong to me.
Having the boolit engage the rifling to a lot of us is a desired thing. It helps start the round straight into the bore.
    What rifle?

I like my cast rifle bullets engraving the lands if the rifle let's me. What cartridge are you loading?

You could have that boolit larger than the throat. It looks wrong to me also

^^^^^ Looks to me like the profile is hitting to soon. Try a different style bullet, that one my not be your best choice.

    30-06 in a 1953 760 gamemaster. (Pump action)

All the rounds ive shot were 1.5 to 2 moa @ 100 yards. Granted they were very reduced.

What does the book say your COAL should be with that bullet and what are you getting setting just off the lands?

    Just tested/ measured a 309 sized bullet.

COAL jumped to 2.785 touching the lands.

    311 was 2.730.

Either i found my issue or just opened up a can of worms

According to the Lyman 49 the 160 s/b 3.050 COAL.

Just my opinion but you are waaaaay passed the crimp groove. I don't have any NOE load data, and that bullet profile could be for any .30.. I just don't want to see somebody get hurt, not trying to argue.

Looks like a 30-30 style- too fat in the front for the 30-06. But if it shoots good and safe- rock on I say.

    couple of things.
the ranch dog molds are designed for the 30-30.
    the Marlin throated 30-30's.
they cut a little how do you explain it umm... a pressure relieving ball seat area in front of the neck area of the chamber.
the nose is designed to reach across that void and nestle into the start of the rifling.

    side note:
we have counted 5 different nose shapes for this particular mold.

Well, as you yourself have observed, it is a bad fit provided your measurements to determine COAL are correct.

As an aside, it appears you have a considerable amount of lead oxide on those bullets. Be careful, that stuff is readily ingested.

You could always shoot a few and see what the target tells you. Otherwise, we could speculate forever.

Just sayin'. Good luck whatever you decide.

Hannibal: I thought that was a white powder coat on the boolits.

OP: Don't dump the mold. (Or sell it to me) I love all my Ranch dog molds. Get a LEE .309 or .310 pass through sizer and problem solved. I use this bullet "as cast" in one of my Marlin 336's because it demands FAT boolits for it to shoot. It actually shoots tighter with the Ranch Dogs than with the jacketed bullets. It makes life easier.

I use the RD's at .309 in my 308 and 30-06. It is a fine boolit and designed for tumble lube.

    my 2 cents.

I have a 309 sizer. That's how i sized that WHITE POWDER COAT 311 bullet. Down to 309 for the last picture.

I'm also thinking about only backing off.005 the lands or none @ all.

This is my hunting Bullet only.

So... I decided to smoke a 311 bullet that i loaded 0.100 longer then my current measurements and chamber it.

If feels the same way the 309 round feel when chambering.

The last ~.100is where the lands are LIGHTLY touching the bullet

The soot is barely scrapped off. So im not sure what to proceed with.

These bullets are conveniently loaded to the crimp groove.

My mistake. Didn't catch the powder coat. Sorry.
