    357mag 125 grain?

I need to replace my stock of carry ammo for my 3&1/2” S&W m27. Is any current ammo loaded to the level of older ammo? We didn’t chronological it but some new Remington 125gr I shot with my brother the other day seemed lighter than my old stock. Has anyone get any chrono data on any current offerings of 357mag 125gr?
    Thanks

Through my S&W M19 with a 4" barrel, new manufacture Remington 125 gr. JSP's chrono at 1285 fps with an extreme spread of 15 fps. Accuracy at 25 yds was under 2" for a 6-shot group. It's a good load for carry, but the JHP version may be more to your liking. At 1285 fps, the SP is manageable in a K-frame for follow up shots. It'd be even easier in your N-frame. Best way to find out is to use a chrono yourself. Speer used six identical S&W revolvers and found up to 200 fps difference with the same factory loads.

There are some "medium" velocity 357 Magnum loads out there. Might be listed as Low Recoil.

Rodfac, let me share an experience with you. Back in the early 1970's I owned a M-19 with 6 inch barrel. I liked the concept of the 125 grain bullet with it's higher velocity and ran through a lot of them. That lasted until I was cleaning the revolver and found that the FRAME had cracked under the bottom of the barrel where the yoke closes into the frame. I called S&W and they agreed to look at the firearm. They replaced the frame. When they returned it to me there was a "Notice" card included in the shipment. The details on this card spoke about the pressure curve of 357 ammo loaded with 125 grain bullets being different from other bullet weights and that they did NOT recommend this loading for their M-19. Sad but true. If your revolver is of the earlier production series you may want to use a somewhat reduced load for 125 grain bullets or even switch to another weight. The earlier production frames are no longer available.

Even IF the newer stuff is slightly less powerful than days of old, it will still perform well enough for the stated purpose of self defence against 2 legged critters. That said, I roll my own.

I cracked the forceing cone ( rear of barrel) on a colt lawman mkIII firing a 125 grain blue dot load recommended by Hercules. The mkIII colts are built like a tank but everything has its limits and firing a box or more of this load without maybe cooling it down a bit between cylinder loads probably did it in. Usually Hercules ( Alliant) is usually on the safer side but afterwards it was hotter than other manuals stated as max.. I later discovered Alliant posted a warning that blue dot was no longer recommended for 125 grain .357 loading. Even a 1200 FPS loading of a 125 grain JHP will probably provide total penetration on a human target. Some departments would not allow 357 ammo in urban settings for fear of a still lethal projectile after penetrating the primary target. My 1500 FPS 357 125 grain reloads with H1100 out of a 6” barrel are used to blow up 2 liter soda bottles and show the effectiveness of the .357 cartridge. Just my .02.

The warning from Speer must have come after their 14th manual because BLUE DOT is listed in it.

I'm not a big user of the .357 mag but if I need it, the old Federal 125gr semi-jacketed, semi-wadcutter hollow point is the load I turn to.
    Attachment 210233

That load can be hard on K-frames, so use sparingly.
Federal still loads this as the C357B
