When I let the dog out to do his business at daylight I noticed it was gonna be a pretty morning. Grabbing my 34 Roberts I crossed the garden fence and eased into the neighbors field where I generally call from.
Stepping into the field I see a coyote under a bunch of roosted turkeys. At about 300 yds it sees me and eases back towards the woods. I go back to the house and get my 223 since the shooting might get longer than I was comfortable with the 34. I would really like to hold coyote shots at 150 yds. Their not very big when you get the hair off.
Sneaking around the field and coming in behind a small rise I see this one looking at me. Only the head was visible over the rise. Took an offhand shot at 40 yds. The 34 would have been just fine.
Made 3 sets but didn't call anything up.
One year I was hunting a piece of property that long shots were a sure possibility so I carried my 25-06 with 75 gr V max. Killed 5 coyotes and a bobcat. Closest shot was 7 yds longest was 35 yds. You just never know.
