    WTB 45acp reloading

My father just picked up a RRI Tactical II 1911. I’m rather impressed, so I’m thinking for Christmas I’ll try to get things ready so I can cast and reload for him on a minimal budget, read as I’m broke!
So I’m looking for .45acp dies, a little brass, 100-200rds, he’s not a big shooter. Possibly a mold to cast for him, single or double cavity. Then it only came with one magazine so I’d like to try and find two more for a decent price?
Thanks for looking and we’ll see what falls out of the tree.

I’ve been asked about trade fodder, I honestly don’t have much, but here it is.
8 Winchester 30-30 once fired brass.
25 Winchester once fired 45 Colt brass. (Really dirty!)
117ish Wolf once fired .223. Fairly dirty with crimped primer pockets.

You say that you want to cast for him...what profile & weight are you thinking about?
I might have a Lee 2 cavity that will ge'terdone.

It’s just going to be a plinker, no hunting or self defense duties, so the primary thing is something that will feed well.

Well, if I were going to guess which 'cast' profile would be a guaranteed feeder in any auto...I'd guess the truncated cone. I'm not sure about that though as my Colt Combat Commander is a little goat...it'll eat anything.
The other consideration is sizing, how are you going to size? Lubesize or maybe Powder Coat and use a push through sizer?
Are you thinking about a tumble lube or regular grease groove?
My .45ACP plinkers have been 200 grain, I like to kick them a tad bit faster and enjoy getting the most out of my PB pound for number of casts...what weight are you thinking?

edit: Here's what Lee has for the .45ACP...might help you decide.

I’m powder coating and using the NOE push through die. I’ll have to order one for this gun.

I prefer the grease groove's as they leave you with a nice and wide top drive band to adjust your overall cartridge length and to land a good taper crimp on...you can powder coat or grease in a lubesizer.

Take a look at the Lee mould link...you tell me what best fits your needs.

I have a set of Lee dies, rough looking but functional and a box of 225gr cast lead round nose, couple hundred at least.
It's the 3 die set with shell holder, and the dipper.
$25 shipped to you. If interested PM me please.

Sorry, either been busy or not feeling well! I think I’ve got the brass covered right now, thank you!

I am, but will need to wait until the 1st of the month if that’s alright?

As someone on a budget, you need to be carefull. You really do not want to buy a "wrong for your gun" mold.

As noted in another active thread (link at botttom of post), many of these guns have next to no throat.

The Lee 230 truncated cones are OK but you may have to seat them deeper than you like for some guns. The TC is pretty good for smooth feeding.

I load the Lee TL452-230-2R. It steps down to a smaller diameter just in front of the tumble lube bands. The 2R round nose profile is as smooth feeding as they get. It works great for me with no sizing. I just cast it, tumble it in BLL and seat it with just a smidge of the front tumble lube band visible. With BLL, this boolit runs lead free for me anywhere from plinkers to stout loads.

Both of the Lee 200 SWCs are pretty safe from a throat standpoint. They can be seated with the front band flush with the case if needed. Lots of folks have smooth feeding with SWCs, but I have no experience myself.

Anthing 200 and up will eat up a lot of lead fast if you end up casting in any kind of volume. Other mold makers have some nice looking SWCs and/or TCs in the 185 gr weight range.

Right now I’m leaning to the Lee 452-200 RF mold. The gun has been throated nicely so I don’t think the FP will cause a feeding issue, and it looks like the radius will allow it to chamber alright.
If this gun sees 100rds a year I’d be surprised, my father isn’t a big shooter anymore. That’s another reason I’m trying to keep it on the cheap.
