Thanks for that information. I have done the soft point casting, but it is tedious and a lot of trouble. Haven't used one on game yet, but I like the Lyman 311284 so much in a couple of different rifles, I'd like to hunt with it, but have reservations about the round nose. Either soft nose casting or this may be the answer.

The loudest sound you'll hear is a click when you expect a bang. Good work being persistent with the .348 - Beautiful buck!

Nice deer and a great cartridge. Just finished reading an article about the 348 and the M71 in the latest issue of either Handloader or Rifle. Back in the early ‘70’s, I picked up 4 boxes of 348 silvertip ammo in a trade. Had several guys begging me for them. Finally broke down and sold them.

Never handled the M71. Is it similar in size to the 1895 Winchester? We took one of these in trade when I worked at a LGS. It was the Russian version in 7.62x54R and seems like it was fairly heavy, if I remember correctly.

That is a beautiful area, I spent a couple weeks working around Brooklin a few years ago. I wouldn't mind ending up living out there one day.

Congratulations from a fellow Mainer. I'm hoping to tag one with my muzzle loader. My nephew has an original Winchester 348 and his wife took a moose with it a few years ago. The only thing wrong was using factory jacketed ammo!

The model 71 is essentially a model 1886 with a couple of minor mods.

    Good afternoon and Congratulations !
That is a big ol feller you were blessed with ! I sure hope you did not have to drag him far.
We have made soft nose cast for several calibers and feel the little extra work is well worth it. Have used ours mostly in the 375 and 414 Supermag Dan Wesson Revolvers. Those soft noses mushroom on impact and the hard bases keep right on pushing through. We do our load work with straight WW then use the soft nose for hunting. 20 last a long time as only ever needed one at a time in the river bottoms we hunt.

I had forgotten about the foil between the mould halves trick. Veral Smith told me about it a few years back when I had him make me a spitzer bullet mould to shoot in sabots in a 50 cal inline. I got tired of paying a buck apiece for pre-packaged bullets to hunt with. Quit drinking the kool- aid and build something that really works! Congrats on a beautiful whitetail!

What a dandy buck. Congratulations are in order!

Love the .348. Mine is a 1936 model and the last time I took it out, put 3 shots (200gr RCBS) in 2 1/2" at 210 yards! Velocity is about 2250 fps.

I was lucky, i had about a 200yard downhill drag to the shoreline and was able to load him up into the skiff to get back to my boat. The soft pointed cast bolts definitely hit hard, world of difference between the same bullet hard cast and soft pointed.

I load for a friends model 71. Nicely balanced with maybe just a tad of extra weight for hunting but needed when firing full power 348 ammo. To simulated the great feel of a 71 but in a more economical package, find a model 64 Win..
