    First CB deer thank you

I wanted my first post on this forum to be a thank you. I have been combing through the threads of this site for a couple years. So many generous and knowledgeable individuals have provided information that shaved years of failure off of this process for me. I still have much to learn but, you have brought me to a place where I can put meat on my family's table without a dependence on J-words or Korean made carbon fiber. As much as I love archery hunting, I am overwhelmed by the pride that comes from pouring your own and heading to the woods. THANK YOU!
    Now the details:
    Rem 700CDL 35 Whelen
    LEE 358-200 AC COWW
    White label Carnauba Blue
    Gator Gas check
    32 grs of IMR 4198

Welcome and good work on that nice buck. I'm going out in the morning to try for my 2nd CB buck. Two weeks ago I got a spike with one of my 30-30s; tomorrow it's my .358 Win with your boolit's twin- the RCBS 200 RNFP. I hope to get one as nice as yours.

Welcome to the site and congrats on your first. I'd say a nice buck on the ground taken by your 35 whelen is a great "first post" also lol!

Good work; what a nice buck! Don't think I have anything to teach you but thanks for saying thank you to the board! It's a great feeling ain't it; making your own from the ground up and bringing home meat!

Thanks for the kind words guys. Casting certainly has become an addiction for me and this deer has solidified it as more than just a fun hobby for me. My minty little 1899 Krag started it all for me with an NOE 311284. That gun produced groups right out of the gate that I didn't know it was capable of and I was hooked. I'm yet to really find "success" with a plain base mould but, I'm up for the challenge.

The Lee bullet is a close copy of the RCBS 200 grain FP as I understand, which is a great bullet. I've used it on deer in a .358, works great.

That's a real nice buck, by the way. Congrats on doing it with cast.

Well done sir! Love it when a plan comes together as nicely as yours did.

Now, with that under your belt don't be afraid to raise your voice.

    Thanks again guys

The similarities to the rcbs is exactly why I selected it. I have been fighting with a ruger No1 in 45-70 that I'm certain has a barrel constriction. This summer when i realized I was about out of time again to hunt with CBs I decided it was time for a Hail Mary. The $20 LEE fit the family budget on short notice and I am far from disappointed. I had an H4895 load that was more accurate and should have produced a little more velocity but, during the last range session with it I started getting inconsistent ignition. I had stored it in the fridge overnight and it didn't react well to my artificial "hunting conditions". The 4198 never waivered.

Maybe just maybe you can now shake-and-bake a powder coat on that boolit and do away with the gas check in your search for a 'plain base'??? Congrats on the buck!

Not to dramatic. Both entrance and exit holes viewed from inside the cavity were 50-60 caliber. I try to shoot them a little higher than a pure heart shot just to make sure I contact the lungs(makes a shorter track with archery equipment). The bullet tore all the arteries off the heart and damaged the lower 1/3 of both lungs. According to the load data I should have been just shy of 1800fps at the muzzle so maybe 1650 at impact? It did everything I hoped for but sure wasn't a lightning strike.

they rarely are unless you hit bone.

if you want success with plain base boolits look up posts by Ben.
he mostly shoots 50 yards but has the real 'one ragged hole' thing mastered with many calibers and powders.
