    30-30 cast gets a doe

Sorry. No pictures. Camera is DOA. I watched this doe for about 20 minutes just at the edge of my limited range with trifocals. She finally worked her way to about 40 yards and stepped in front of a tree. Safe shot so I took it. High shoulder shot with a Lee 170 rfn gc from my ballard rifled Marlin 336 with a new peep sight. I love the peep sights anyway so I bought one and put it on and went out and set the sights. One shot- one kill. She new even took a step. DRT. Young doe but she will eat good. Probably about 100 pounds. Should be really tender. Lead does it again.

BTW the load I used was 30 Grains 4064 under the Lee 170. Shoots real good for me.

Excellent work! Love the small good eating ones.
Gotta get the camera fixed - some claim if there are no pictures it didn't really happen

30-30 Makes Meat. The perennial headline!
Good job; that mould is on my to-get list. Is your Marlin a 12" twist? My Win 94 hasn't found it's favorite boolit yet. The 150 Lee fp is great in my 10" twist Mauser 30-30 but not in the Win.

Nice. I might have to try that high shoulder shot.

The .30-30 gets it done again. My first "small bore" cast deer kill was with a .30-30 (Savage 340).

    Congrats on the meat.

Not for sure on the twist. Never checked it. Mine is a 1969 with ballard cut rifling. Works with any weight boolit I put in it so am assuming it is 1-10.

1969 Marlin Lever with ballard rifling? I was unaware that they made any 30-30's without Microgroove after,,, er, 1955-ish. (?)
I have a good stock of 36's and pre microgroove 336s, so I can't get top excited. I have found all Marlins have shot well for me with lead.
Also, in my experience, Marlins seem to shoot better with slugs cast up to .312 and sized to .310. Our results may vary.

with careful placement it's drt...every time.

    1/12" twist btw.
    Standard for the .30/30.
    Up to 200gr ok.
Count grooves. 6 is .Ballard, 8-12 is MicroGroove. MicroGroove not bad, just different. Typically needs a slightly larger boolit.
I size all .30cal .311" works great in all my .30/30's. (Win and Marlin).

I love the 30-30. Congrats on some fine eats. I’m casting the same boolit using COWW and sized with .309 Lyman Lubesizer. Load is 25.5grs IMR 3031. Same load is used with my Ranch dog 165gr. No deer have fallen with either yet.
Peep sights work wonders too. Even with these 1972 eyes
    Enjoy your venison.

This may sound stupid but I didn't know Marlin made the 30-30 with micro groove rifling. My friend has a 1980's era Marlin and I'm pretty sure it's a 336. It has regular 6 groove rifling.

I use the Lee 160gr 2R TL powder coated. I flat point it for hunting and for tubular magazines. With powder coating and copper gas check it weighs in slightly over 165gr.

I picked up a 94 winchester made in 1950, also 30-30 and shot a deer with cast bullets this year.

I have a 1961 Marlin 336 and it has 6 groove rifling, not microgroove. I also have a 1958 marlin that has microgroove though shot out and I am waiting on the replacement barrel.
