    Good pin punch

So what is a good brand of pin punches to get.
New ones bend so easy, it's not worth using.
Craftsman used to be good, until they were made in china.
Now there're not worth the package they come in.
Looking for a started punch and regular length punch.
1/16" and 1/8" are all I really need.

I get most of that sort of thing from Brownell's.
Machinist supply catalogs have them too.

It's like GOOD drill bits- you ain't going to find them at a retail place.

I got a set of 5 starter & 5 seater punches when I assembled my first AR. They have worked fine.

I will admit that you can do with less.

Have a set of Starret pin punches that have served for many years.
Drilled a couple extra holes in the wood case they come in and added a couple spares of the two smallest sizes. Frank

I bought a mayhew brand 1/16" from brownells last order. I am pleased thus far considering I've not tried to break it. Made in USA.

drill bits upside down work real good for small punches. I have a bunch of junk bits over the years and so after bending small steel punches all time I made my own with bits. I took 3/8 rod cut them in 3'' inch length and drill the end of rod center and straight to the drill punch size you need now drill thru the side for 1\8 " set screw close to base then if you bust a bit drop it out put in a new junker and if next bit is a little smaller it will still hold it.

All good answers. Key points to remember; good and cheap are highly unlikely to appear in the same tool, and no matter how good they are, small diameter punches are prone to bending or breaking if pushed too hard. That’s just simple Physics.

I made a set of handles and use shanks of old drill bits. The bits are held in with a set screw easily replaced and you can shape the tips to suit either pin punch or roll pin punch.

    Great idea.
I will get right on it.
    Thank you

Its not always just the pin punches. I have LS Starrett, and good punches. But if you dont hold them square and hit them square they will bend or break.

A PanaVise mod.381, padded jaws and suction base saves tools and patience in many applications.
