First deer with a handgun...you'll never forget that one. My first deer ever was with a Ruger .44 mag flat top 6.5" bbl. That was 54 years ago! I've shot many since then, mostly with the .44 magnum in a revolver, but I have taken a few with the TC Contender 10" bbl in 7mm TCU. I don't remember the details on a lot of them, but I sure do that first one. I was in the service in northern Maine, and I spied a small buck in a potato field as I stepped outta the car, that I and a bunch of buddies had just had lunch in. As I pulled the hammer back, I heard one of my buddies say" Look at that,...he's trying to make us believe he saw something" When the revolver went off, you never saw 3 guys pile out of a car so fast in all your life. The distance was a little over 100 paces, I aimed for the shoulder and hit it in the neck. Bang flop. I had to have one of my buddies show me how to gut the buck, because I had never done it. Ah, the memories as we age!

Nice job man...Handgun hunting has always been a "bucket list" thing for me to do (especially with my 1942 issue 1911). But , alas, up here in the frozen north my govnt. wont trust me (or anyone else for that matter) in the bush with one...very envious of you folks these days...
Didn't see where he said that was his limit. The old 45, with good bullets proves again that it works just fine in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. Great job!

The deer ran close to 100 yards. The shot hit high between a few ribs back, angled down and exited lower between two ribs. It then hit the lower part of the shoulder blade. I was hoping for a little expansion but I don't think it expanded much without hitting a rib and until it hit the shoulder blade. Expansion would have been a bonus but I wanted to be able to make a shot at most any angle except straight north and was confident it would do it's job without any. At 20 yards, I would shoot an elk broadside with this load. I practice out to 50 yards but if I think it will be much over 30, one of my scoped Herretts gets her turn.
It's sad but out to 30 yards, I'm much more accurate with my bow than I am with a handgun. I need a lot more range time.
The rest of the season I used my Redhawk in 44 Magnum with a large NOE hollow point for special effects but didn't get a chance to use it.
