    First handgun deer today

Was hunting at my brother's today. I already harvested a buck from his 15 acres with my bow so he wanted me to take one of the many doe around his place. I was sitting in a stand with max range of 30 yards all around so my firearm of choice was my Springfield 1911 Range Officer in 45acp. It is set up for 45 Super but I only shoot upper +P ACP loads in it occasionally and practice with normal pressure rounds. It is very accurate. My load was the NOE 452-230 with the cup point lubed with Carnuba Red. Boolit was 50/50 WW with 2% tin and pure weighing in at 245 grains. Powder was 7.5 grains of Power Pistol. This should be close to 950 fps. She was a very large and older doe and the shot was just a little over 20 yards. It was a higher lung shot. Put a 1" hole in them and kept on going.Click image for larger version.

Excellent work 30! Not many deer are taken with a 1911. You knew your limitations and made the best of an opportunity to fit your tool to the task at hand. Good eating no doubt.

Congratulations 30hrrtt on a great hunting season. You have been successful using your bow and a handgun to harvest your deer. Your chosen platforms for your season shows that your abilities are very good. I have shot many deer with a long gun but none with either weapons you used. Great job.

Nice work with my favorite pistol.
My first handgun deer was with a .535 rb.
    My second was a 41 mag j-word.
I want my third to be .45 acp/200 swc now!

If his boolit was a RNFP the difference between his load and a factory .45 Colt load is small. Not hard to see why it worked. I doubt if Jeff Cooper would have wondered. GF

nope,,, 45's are for shooting 200 lb people not 150 lb deer.
it'll never work, sorry, your gonna have to throw that one back and bring a bigger gun.

yup! in Oklahoma that would be shenanagins! pistol cartridges must be 1.25" long. because heaven forbid you use a 44 spl!

    Go back & re-read the regs.....it is legal in Okla since a 1911 is a semi-automatic handgun

    Centerfire handguns:
    Chambered for .24
caliber or larger and 100 grain or heavier
soft-nosed bullet having an overall cartridge
case length of 1.25 inches or longer are legal
(.357 or larger) and a minimum barrel length
    of 4 inches.

    Semi-automatic handguns:
    Chambered for
any centerfire ammunition with a 100-grain
or heavier soft-nosed bullet and having a
cartridge case size of .40 caliber or larger (in
    -
cludes 10 mm, .357 Sig., and 40 cal. or larger)
and a minimum barrel length of 4 inches
An old Cherokee was teaching his grandson about life. "Inside me two wolves fight," he told the boy.
"One is evil - he is anger, envy, greed, arrogance, self-pity, resentment, lies, false pride, and ego. The other is good - he is joy, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, generosity, truth and faith. The same fight is inside you - and every other person, too."
The grandson thought for a minute and asked,"Which wolf will win?"
The old Cherokee replied, "The one you feed."

    Nice!
With your screen name I was thinking Contender, but a 1911 is plenty at 20 yards.

Yep, a mag-a-num would be fine but a SUPER mag-a-num would be even better!

Taking a deer with a 1911 is pretty cool! Did it myself a couple years back (MiHec 454423). I've taken quite a number with a bow. I think taking one with an open sighted handgun is in many ways more difficult. Congratulations on the accomplishment.
