tulsa area, has the rut started?

any wise hunter in the northeast part of Oklahoma know if the rut has already started, and if so, how long does it last? gun season starts Saturday, but of course, a nice buck had to amble through our back yard today! it's like god is teasing me!!!! LOL-Travis

well, I am pretty sure that our rut starts later, since we are warmer and a lower latitude, but I just don't know how much later... are there any signs the deer give? I have heard the bucks get stains on their back legs from urine or musk, and their necks swell. but that depends on seeing a buck, lol I didn't notice this morning, guess I was too surprised to pay attention to that. any other signs that I didn't mention?? thaks a lot!-Travis

I'm in Southeast Kansas and today is the first day I've seen any bucks in the daytime. I rattled an 8 pointer to about 60 yards but I couldn't get him any closer. I rattled a 4 pointer close enough to shoot him with a blowgun. So I think it's really start to kick in now.

Bucks in McAlester area were chasing hard a week ago. I think it is now in the tail end of rut/mostly over now. I hunted the McAlester ammunition plant hunt and there were a lot of nice bucks killed. The older 3+ year old bucks were active and chasing does last weekend.

I'm in north central Kansas and last Sunday evening, I rattled about 45 minutes before it got dark and had three little dink bucks (at least three, could have been as many as five, they kept coming and going in thick woods) come in to it. Was a lot of fun, but didn't shoot one. This weekend should be height of the rut and I plan to get less picky and kill one. I want to have my hunting done before rifle season so I can help get my son one.

well wish me luck for tomorrow, I have shot does, never had a chance on a buck though. I'm not sure who might be closer as far as when the bucks are rutting, mcalester, you are quite a bit west from me, southeast Kansas is closer. who knows? but hopefully the rut isn't over yet here... does latitude and longitude play a factor, or do you think it is more local, as in when good food sources are available, like the mast crops. our acorns have been dropping for a while, and still are. anyways, thanks!-Travis
