Randy: The only reason I avoided the scope is that it adds a lot of extra weight to the gun and affects his gun handling. There is very little advantage of a Scope over a Red Dot optic at 300 or less, and at Conversational distances there is a significant advantage to the Red Dot. Target acquisition is so much faster with the dot it is scary. Also the extra weight of the scope will slow down presentation at closer distances.

The vast majority of Combative type shooting is accomplished at less than 100 yards, so the faster you get on target the better off you will be.

Anyway good luck with his training. he'll really enjoy it.

I have a red dot that I bought for him but he don't know it, he thinks he needs a scope for coyotes, there is a lot of them close to the farm, and he can shoot out to 700yds at the local range, it has metal dongs. I bought them a family member ship this year.
Its another thing he wont have to ask for later. I would rather he have small regular sights and a quick detach base if he decides to use the scope.
I think regular sights work better when its dark, we shoot all kinds of pest at night, in the yard at the farm.
I was just trying to make sure he got his moneys worth, we weren't trying to buy the cheapest for the dollar.

The good thing is he has plenty of money saved, MOM said he has to buy a safe, he's pick one out at SCHEELS. I've gave the family a hand full of guns and they have bought several. I don't think they can afford a safe that's why mom is making him buy one.

Not bad. I prefer neck shots or high lungs. I consider it a stand gun; I use bigger guns when walking the woods. 22-250 is very good also.

Back in August Optics Planet had this on sale for $199.99 plus a $25 gift certificate.

Only had it out a couple of times but I have been very impressed with it. It's on my AR used for calling coyotes.

Free shipping no tax just pay 20 or 25 to the FFL

He wants a Ruger so get the Ruger. With the two stage trigger, the stocks and the m-lock float tube the price is competitive.

For coyote and prairie dogs the reticle in the 1 - 8x24mm is more useful since it has windage hold offs. I may get one myself.

Not really sure what the reticle in the 1 - 6 is good for?

A little more money but still get a free mount here. If you have an FFL in the family they can get dealer price from Brownells

The Magpul AFG2 Angled Forend Grip AR-15 Polymer will not work on the m-lock forearm unless you get rail sections.

Nothing wrong with a Ruger 556.

Just bought a complete kit less lower (not a Ruger) for $419 at Palmetto State Armory. 223 Wylde, 18" barrel. Nice. Goes on sale about every two weeks.

Hope for the best, plan for the worst.
My amendment can beat up your amendment.
