Stopped in the local gun shop yesterday, checked the price on 5744 because I am getting low.
$42.99.
Is this the new normal for this powder?
Loading in the 40 grain range for what I am using it for makes it a little spendy.

I bought a pound to try in 454 and 460 and liked it. Evidently I didn't look at the price when I bought it, when I went back to get another pound I received sticker shock. I checked at another lgs and they had the same price. All the other powders I use are still priced the same. I liked it, but not enough to pay a twelve or thirteen dollar premium.
Wow. Now I can justify the large purchase of 4759 I made before it went out of production.
bought 1lb week ago finally got some . YIKES 62 bucks this sucks gotta find a different pwdr or source or both!!!!
$36 bucks a lb at most of the stores here.
$30.25

I used to use 5744 but cost has me using other powders. Some actually work better some are close enough. If I had a perfect load with 5744 and was shooting competition, I'd be forced over the barrel. I mostly shoot mill surps and such so for me a can of red dot is just about as good and a fraction of the cost. Surplus rife, lee mold, range scrap and red dot is still a lot of fun.
Based on a per cartridge figure using 5744 vs. some other powder, is the additional cost really that great? If it is, there is a glut of powders available today, likely far more than we need. I've used 5744 for about as long as it's been on the market to load several rifle cartridges, but I have little doubt it's performance could be duplicated with some serious load development using other powders.
I luckily bought a 8lb keg for $100.00 a couple years ago. Local reloading store has it for $32.00 or so I believe.

Was starting to get hooked on 5744 for all my cast bullet rifle loads until it appeared the price shot up during the shortage. Switched to unique and 2400 and made those work instead.
Looked yesterday at Sportsman's Warehouse $35.99

Brownells has it for $33.99 a pound or eight pounds for $246.99 which brings it to $30.87 a pound.
