Savage 99 serial numbers and dates

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone can help me date a Savage99E in 308W, serial is C384XXX

I would like to narrow it down from 1953-1999.

Any details of savage serial numbers would be appreciated

    thanks

What letter is on the lever? You can try this site: http://www.savage99.com/savage99_dates.htm

Thanks for that a letter C is supposed to be 1951. But I am not sure that is right as the barrel seems to be original and the 308w didn't come out until 1953!

1977 is the date of manufacture. The letter is in the serial number, not part of the lever boss code/LBC which is a different matter. There is no LBC in 1977, 1967 was the last full year for that. The .308 was introduced in 1952, however Savage did not produce 99's in that caliber until 1955, as they had to lengthen the internal dimensions of the levergun to accept the slightly longer .308 cartridge. Savage started putting a letter in front of the serial number in 1968, and went to B, C, D etc. each time the 6 digit serial number rolled over.

    .

AFAIK, the .308 Savage 99E was only made between 1960 & 1982, so 1977 may be correct - IDK, because IIRC only the Savage Historian (Mr. Callahan ?) has access to the factory records, since Savage will not release any SN records.

David Royal has published a fine book on the 99 with LBC code and serial number history, among other things.

    How about a date on a 99F, 308w, 1033XXX. I can't make out the lever boss code.

Should be an "M" LBC, 1961, tang safety.
