Just a hollow tube with completely open end will suppress to some extent. Any device that will
allow the gas to expand before bullet exiting will do it. But it won't defeat a sonic crack of bullets
traveling in excess of the speed of sound.

Grey in you mind not BATFE's.

Don't build one if you are afraid of that

so great gurus of the internet forum, how does this not violate the suppressor regulations?

It does not make the report of the rifle quieter, and thereby does not do the thing a silencer as defined by ATF does. It also doesn't have baffles inside to trap sound.

That's a brake, not a silencer. All it does is direct the gas. It doesn't reduce the sound.

that's all a sound box does, direct the sound. so if the linear brake/compensator is good to go why would a pringles can with a little bit of foam in it be bad?

The foam will absorb some of the noise, serving as baffling material.

A sound box with baffles (e.g. the tires) will not merely redirect noise, it also quiets the noise. Baffling disrupts the sound pattern by trapping some of the high-energy expanding gas until it cools. A standing sound box is not considered a silencer (per the NFA) because it's not mobile and doesn't attach to the firearm.

A sound box with baffles (e.g. the tires) works in a different way than does a suppressor. The sound box captures the noise from the muzzle blast and attenuates it. The suppressor on the other hand captures the escaping gas at the muzzle and prevents the noise from the muzzle blast from happening.
