    I agree. Until you've actually shot it past 150yds, I wouldn't trust any ballistic charts. If it's dead on at 100, 150 is doable. Gets iffy from there on out. Lone gun and others are correct. The way you phrased it got misconstrued as if you were nonchalant about hunting at longer ranges without verification of performance. I don't believe you are.

    I like the .45-70, but the range is why I keep from getting one. I wanted a deer rifle this fall for cornfield hunting, but I need something that at 200 and possibly 300 yards so I ended up with my 6.5 Swede. Granted they aren't in the same ballpark. For something up to 150 yards I run shotgun slugs. I still like .45-70, I have owned two in the past, but I think if I want a big bore, I might as well run up to a .45-90 where I can get a bit more out of it.
    Whatever cannot be remedied, must be endured.

    500 grains of soft lead at over 1700FPS. Closer to 1800 if I remember correctly.

    That would be a heck of a load for a .45-70 in an 85. Must be smokeless powder.
