    trigger finger

I am reading the Complete Book of Shooting By Jack O'Connor and few other authors. On page 24 I quote " Many uninstructed rifle shots make the mistake of trying to let the shot off with the tip of the index finger. That is O.K. with a hair or set trigger, use the pad of muscle between the first and second joints." I have never shot this way, and was wondering if anyone here pulls the trigger with the pad of muscle between the first and second joints. I am no way saying it is right or wrong just wondering. I apologize if this the wrong area for this could not find anything that fit quite right. thanks rrh

Well, all I know is for many years the USMC would not allow anyone to join the Corps unless they had at least a stub of the 1st joint. Figured they couldn't shoot without it.

I was taught to "get as much finger" on the trigger as possible. Give it a try. The perceived trigger pull will be less and shooting this way won't disturb the gun as much.

God put that first joint at the tip of your finger there expressly for trigger pulling and booger picking. Everyone knows that.

My mom and the Navy taught me to use the pad of my finger tip and pull the trigger straight back. Gets hard on my ARs. If i use to much finger i have a tendency to roll my shots.

I used the center of the pad for rifle , double action revolvers I'll move the contact closer to the first joint .

Grips and hands are all different. The only common aspect is the whatever location you use needs to move straight back.

    From the Marine shooting team.

    Grip of the Right Hand
The pistol grip or stock is grasped firmly with the right hand, and the forefinger is placed on the trigger with the thumb and remaining fingers wrapped around the pistol grip or stock. Firm rearward pressure should be exerted to help keep the rifle butt firmly in the shoulder, reducing the effects of recoil. The trigger finger should be placed naturally on the trigger and care should be taken to ensure that the trigger finger can move independently without dragging on the side of the receiver. A proper grip allows the trigger to be moved straight to the rear without disturbing sight alignment.

I use the center of the first pad and exercise with each hand at least weekly to make sure I can move that finger without moving the rest of my hand.

ive always put the center of my finger print on the center of the trigger. ive tried just about everything and that's always whats worked for me and everyone ive taught how to shoot. been that way for the last 10 years that ive shot competitively and for long range precision out to 1200yds.
