    .22 LR Ammo

I am sure this comes up all the time but I don't shoot rimfire and am consequently not well versed. My son and his son (Boy Scout) got 2 Savage rifles with scope and heavy barrels for target shooting. What would be the best commercial ammo for them to use? Thanks for your help.

CCI Standard Velocity is the best buy for Junior training programs, Appleseed, etc. We buy ours from Champions Choice.

All my 22's have there own preference to the ammo that shoots the best.
Start out with the cheapest or what you'll be able to always get. Well, unless your different than me and be able to buy a whole bunch at one time when you find one that works.
and like outpost said, standard velocity.

When you go shopping take a micrometer with you and measure the knurled, cylindrical bearing surface of the bullet outside of the case. For target ammunition you want this diameter to be 0.224" or greater, approaching the .225" SAAMI max. Most high speed ammo intended for semiauto rifles and handguns is of smaller bullet diameter, typically .221-.223" and will be less accurate than a larger bullet which is a better fit in the chamber.

CCI Standard Velocity is my recommendation also. It's very accurate and consistent, and a good deal less expensive than the typical Eley or similar 22's.

I have a Savage MkII bull barrel, it prefers 40gr American Eagle ammo. It'll do same hole at 50' (had to sight it at a pistol range) with boring regularity off a bench with the bipod. I can hit 6" steel target at 125 yards with ease if the wind isn't too bad.

CCI standard volicity (blue paper box 1080fps) is all ways a good choice......in my anschutz I shoot either SK rifle (yellow box) or eley .....this may or may not work for depending on the rifles chamber, match vs. Sporting.........

Don't put Remington anything in it, or any high velocity ammo if you are looking for a good grouping load.........

Head over to rimfirecentral......those guys live, breath, eat and sleep rimfires....

Although CCI standard velocity works best for me and my rifles, handguns, it would be prudent to test several brands in their rifles.

once you find the ammo the rifles like, go back and buy all you can of the same lot, as it changes.

True. Have to shoot several brands to find the answer that works.
I shot sporter rifle for a few years with CCI Blazer. Grouped well and I was a hot shooter.

I would add that they make the best .22 ammo, period.

Probably one of the better places to buy ammo is target sports usa.

    https://www.targetsportsusa.com/cci-...035-p-884.aspx

No sales tax unless you live in CT, plus you can find other brands of standard velocity cheaper then the CCI brand. Free shipping on 5000 or more.

I like CCI Blazer. Silver and black box. It shoots consistent in all the rimfires I have shot it through.
You can miss fast & you can miss a lot, but only hits count.

IF you have a semi-auto which requires high velocity ammo to function reliably, it is a good choice. I prefer the black "jelly jar wax" lube of the real Lewiston, ID ammo to the gray dry wax of the Blazer loaded by ATK in its Federal, Anoka, MN facility. Bullet diameter of the Federal Blazer clone ammo is smaller also, and it is less accurate. Measure yours with a micrometer. My Lewiston Blazer measures .2235-.224" and is accurate. The Anoka Blazer I got from Sportsman's Guide measures .2225-.223" and is functionally OK, but fouls more and is less accurate.

Hey Outpost, how can you tell where your Blazers were manufactured? Does it say on the box? Also, what are these Federal Blazer clones? Can you provide more details?
