    Vortex Ball Roller

    Hi all,

If this post is not permitted, please delete it with my apologies. I considered posting it in the For Sale area, but it is only relevant to smoothbore shooters so I figured it would be lost there.

I shoot smoothbore in competition in the North-South Skirmish Association. I was taught by my teammates to roll the balls between two files, so as to roughen up the surface and provide a "tooth" for the Lee Alox lube to stick to. We double (sometimes tripple) tip the balls in Alox lube. (I use Xlox - a much cheaper equivalent). Since the N-SSA does not allow wadding (although they do allow aluminum foil wrapping), I think the Alox lube acts like a soft patch for the ball.

Anyway, rolling the ball between two files works great, but it's time consuming. So, I invented a machine that does the same thing but much easier and much faster.

If you currently shoot round ball and roughen them up using files, you might find this useful:

Never wanted to make the balls rough, but that is the same thng we have used for sprue removal for over 30 years. Made my first one in 83 or so only we welded a lip on the bottom plate and mine was 6 inches or so in diameter on a big drill press. Seem like I got the plans from John Baird or one of those guys.

Is it possible to do more than one ball at a time?
