    Hey there

Just checking in, I have been lurking and learning for the past week or so. I have just started casting to support my wife and I in our USPSA and Steel Challenge addictions.

I am currently casting using a Lee 2 cavity 120 grain 9mm mold that was given to me. I have a new Lyman 450 that I have not used yet. What lube would you all recommend for a ~950 FPS 9mm load? Will WW lead work for this purpose?

    Thanks for any info.

WW will work withoutdoubt. I'll leave load advice to someone who loads 9MM. As for lube, you can't go wrong with a 50/50, but if you want a harder lube, red carnuba , but it will require heat. Speeds to 950 are not too picky. DALE

    Welcome sand

Try Red Dot and Unique in the 9MM.

    I have burnt many a pound in 9mm and 38Super .

Try to get a lyman 356402 truncated cone point bullet 124 gr and will feed in ANY 9mm and shoots really well.

    Welcome and good shooting,

I am a big advocate of Johnsons Paste wax for a lube. I Tumble lube everything inclusing those boolits not designed for tumble lubing, and there is a great thread in clasic stickies on JPW.

Unique and bullseye are my choices for the 9mm. I don't cast and load for my nine anymore since I havn't shot it in nearly 16 years but when I was shooting it alot those were my powders of choice. Also AA#5 and AA#7 work well too. For a quick easy load I used bullseye and an empty 22 LR casing with a bread twist tie for a handle as a powder dipper. It throws about 3.5 grains and with a 120 gr cast boolit will give about 900-950 fps.

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Sarnburg don't forget that in USPSA you have to make a power factor of 125,00 which is fps times bullet weight. 120 grains at 950 fps is only 114. You will need to push the bullet a little harder (1041 fps).

I use the Lyman mold # 356637. It is a 4 cavity mold that drops a 147 grain bullet. At 870 fps then I can make power factor. The bullet has a bevel base which my Lyman 450 lubes. Lube on the base doesn't hurt anything, but makes a mess. I use 3.8 grains of Vihtavuori powder, Federal primers, mixed brass. Very soft load.

I would go with White Lable 50/50. Works well, smokes a little but not that bad, and is very reasonable.

The 950 FPS load is used for Steel Challenge. I use a aftermarket guide rod and 14lbs Wolf progressive recoil spring. The current load of choice is 3.0 grains of Clays, 124 LTC (sized .355), WSP primer, and what ever case I grab out of the 5 gallon bucket of brass under the loader. My XD 9 really seems to like this load. It is soft enough that for the steel matches it keeps my splits nice and tight.
Up until now I have been buying the bullets. I have 300lbs of WW lead that I hope to get processed this winter for next year. I figure 10k will get us through the practice season.

WW will work just fine for IPSC and Steel. Smoke is an issue ... particularly on those early fall match mornings. I'd suggest Carnauba Red as the bullet lube because it generates as little smoke as anything I've seen.

Have used AA #5 and #7 too. I really like Winchester WSF in 9mm though.
